Los Angeles Clippers  Bio

LA Clippers, a professional basketball club headquartered in Los Angeles that competes in the Western Conference of the NBA (NBA). After joining the NBA in 1970, the Buffalo Braves have renamed the New York Knicks, and the team relocated to New York City from Buffalo, New York. Randy Smith and Bob McAdoo were the driving force behind the Braves’ first three winning seasons, which also saw them make the playoffs.

Braves were part of an unprecedented franchise swap in 1978 when the owner of Boston Celtics, Irv Levin, a Californian, intended to move the Celtics to his home state but was prohibited by the NBA from moving the historic team. The Braves’ owner, John Y. Brown, reached an agreement with Levin, trading his team to San Diego for the 1978–79 season as a compromise. During its six years in San Diego, the team, then known as the San Diego Clippers, was one of the league’s poorest, consistently finishing last or second-to-worst.

Donald Sterling, a Los Angeles-based real estate billionaire, purchased the Clippers in 1981 and transferred the franchise to his hometown in 1984. From 1984–85 through 1990–91, the team finished with a losing record in each of its three seasons in the new stadium. Danny Manning led the Clippers to a 45–37 record to the Western Conference playoffs in 1991–92, but they lost in the first round.

After a mediocre regular season the following year, the squad lost in the first round of the playoffs once again. In 1993–94, the Clippers returned to their losing ways, which began a streak of eight straight seasons in which the team finished last in its division.

Elton Brand and Chris Kaman led a promising Clippers team to 47 wins and the second round of the playoffs in 2005–06, but they lost to the Phoenix Suns in a seven-game series. That victory was short-lived, and two years later, they were back in last place in the division. Clippers under Sterling’s ownership had only two winning seasons in 27 years after arriving in Los Angeles in 1984, making them the poorest North American professional sports team.

The 2011–12 Los Angeles Clippers season was the most drastic improvement attempt in the team’s history when the franchise traded for Chris Paul, a superstar point guard. Paul and Blake Griffin helped the Clippers go to the semifinals of the conference that season. After a better regular season in 2012–13, the Clippers won their first division title and set a team record with 56 victories, but they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

The team’s playoff exit prompted a coaching change, and Doc Rivers, who had led the Boston Celtics to an NBA title in 2007–08, was hired during the off-season. As a result of Rivers’ leadership, the Clippers won their second division championship in the 2013-14 season.

The first round of playoffs for Clippers was thrown into confusion when an audio recording that revealed racist words by Sterling (who had previously faced numerous lawsuits alleging discriminatory housing policies) came to light, throwing the organization into upheaval. As a result, the NBA then took the unusual step of barring an NBA owner from any association with his team or the league for life.

The NBA, Sterling, and his wife engaged in a series of legal fights. Following his removal from his primary ownership position when he was deemed mentally incapable due to Alzheimer’s illness, Sterling’s wife, Shelley, sold the team in August 2014 for a record $2 billion (a North American sports franchise record at the time).

In 2014–15, the Los Angeles Clippers had another successful regular season and a thrilling seven-game postseason series win over the reigning NBA champion San Antonio Spurs, but their season ended in disappointment when the team lost a three-games-to-one series lead to the Houston Rockets in the second round of the playoffs. When Paul and Griffin both sustained season-ending injuries in the Clippers’ fourth postseason game in 2015–16, the club was unable to go past the first round of playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.

Clippers enjoyed a 50-win season in 2016–17 but lost in the first round of playoffs, losing seven games. For the first time in NBA history, the Clippers were knocked out of the playoffs after leading a postseason series for five successive years. In the following off-season, Paul left the team, while Griffin was traded away just months after signing a long-term contract with the franchise. The Los Angeles Clippers ended their six-year postseason streak in 2017–18. In 2018–19, the Los Angeles Clippers made a stunning comeback to the playoffs, losing a hard-fought first-round series to the reigning champion Golden State Warriors.
