Gary Rossington Bio

Gary Rossington was born on December 4, 1951, in the city of Jacksonville, in the United States. Rossington’s father served in the army, and the family tragically lost him shortly after Rossington’s birth. Rossington was raised entirely by his mother, and the two of them formed a lovely bond. Later on, he named his first costly guitar after his mother, naming it “Berniece.” He was inspired by her. Rossington was always interested in baseball as a child, and he had a fantasy of one day playing for the ‘New York Yankees.’

The significant influence of ‘The Rolling Stones’ on his teenage years, on the other hand, piqued his interest. Eventually, he made the decision to pursue music as a serious professional option. It’s interesting to note that the members of ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd’ were brought together by a common love of baseball in the first place. Rossington, Van Zant, and Bob Burns were all teammates in baseball, despite the fact that they were on opposing Jacksonville clubs. The three of them got together once and decided to jam together, and they created their band practically soon after the jam session.

In the beginning, it was known as ‘The Noble Five,’ (with the other two members being Allen Collins and Larry Junstrom), and it was later known as ‘The One Percent.’ The band was originally known as ‘My Backyard,’ but the moniker ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd’ was chosen for them in 1969. Gary Rossington and Dale Krantz were married in 1982. They have two children, Mary and Annie, who are both teachers. The albums ‘Returned to the Scene of the Crime’ and ‘Love Your Man’ were both released by the band they created together as well. Rossington was hospitalized in 2007 after suffering from cardiac difficulties and having to undergo surgery.

On October 8, 2015, he suffered a massive coronary artery bypass graft. ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd’ concerts had to be postponed due to the severity of his condition. In addition, he continues to experience acute muscle discomfort in his legs as a result of the 1977 car accident. Gary Rossington was one of the 20 passengers who were able to escape the plane disaster that took place in 1977. According to him, the sound of the trees brushing up against the plane was like the sound of a thousand baseball bats hitting the jet’s fuselage at the same time. Rossington has played a variety of Gibson Les Pauls and Gibson SGs during his professional career.

Gary Robert Rossington is an American musician and one of the founding members of the southern rock band ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd.’ He is best known for his work with the band ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd.’ Rossington has been the only member of this group who has remained steady over the years. He is a member of the band and plays lead and rhythm guitar. Along with former bandmate Allen Collins, Rossington formed the ‘Rossington Collins Band,’ which is still in operation today. Despite the fact that the famed ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd’ is most recognized for his guitar skills, the founder of the legendary band was initially interested in playing the drums as a teenager.

Rossington rose to prominence following the release of ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd’s first studio album in 1977. ‘Free Bird,’ the album’s big single, was featured on the album. Beginning in the early 1970s, Rossington established himself as a significant figure in the American music scene. ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd’ has reformed, and he is the only original member left.  His work as lead guitarist for the rock band ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd garnered widespread attention in the music world when he appeared on the band’s live tours and studio albums. They were best known for the tunes “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird,” which were both hit singles. “1959 Gibson Les Paul,” which he had named after his mother, was Rossington’s favorite guitar and the one he played the most. He is well known for some of his incredible guitar work, which can be heard in songs such as ‘Tuesday’s Gone’ and ‘Simple Man.’

By 1976, the band had gained considerable popularity, and they were planning a tour for the week following the Labor Day weekend that year. Rossington was involved in an accident over the weekend when he collided with an oak tree while driving his recently purchased ‘Ford Torino.’ At the time of the collision, Rossington was under the influence of drugs and alcohol, according to police. The band penalized him a total of $5,000 in compensation for the delay in the tour that he was responsible for. This encounter served as the inspiration for the song ‘That Smell,’ which was penned by Van Zant and Collins. Rossington’s musical career came to an abrupt halt in 1977 when he was injured in a plane accident that also claimed the lives of the other members of the rock band ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd.’

On October 20, 1977, a plane crashed near Gillsburg, Mississippi, killing all but Rossington. He was the only band member to escape. Following being knocked unconscious by the hit, Rossington found himself buried behind the aircraft’s door when he regained consciousness a short time later. In the “freak accident,” he had damaged his arms, legs, wrists, ankles, and pelvis, among other things. With steel rods in his right arm and right leg, Rossington was able to recuperate from his physical injuries as well as the emotional agony of losing his bandmates and resumed performing on stage. He was, however, still struggling with drug addiction, which had been exacerbated by his need for medications.

In 1980, Rossington teamed together with Allen Collins to form the ‘Rossington Collins Band,’ which was a tribute to their mutual love of music. They put out two studio albums. It was a great response to the first one, which was titled “Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere.” The band, however, came crashing down in 1982 after Collins’ wife passed away. “The Rossington Band” was created in 1986 by Rossington and his wife Dale Krantz-Rossington, who were also members of the band “The Rossingtons.” They released two albums, the first in 1986 and the second in 1988, both of which were critically acclaimed. The rock band ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd’ was reunited in 1987.

Rossington became a member of their tribute tour, which lasted for three years. Since then, Rossington has been performing with the reconstituted ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd.’ With the death of keyboardist Billy Powell in 2009, he is the only original member of the band who is still actively involved with the organization. Gary Rossington made his mark on music history as a founding member of the iconic rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd.  Rossington was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on the day of his birth (December 4, 1951). Tragic events occurred in his life very swiftly, beginning with the death of his father. Rossington developed a strong attachment to his mother as a result of the loss. In fact, when he finally got his first top-of-the-line guitar, he named it Berniece in honor of his mother, who had inspired him to pursue music. Rossington began his musical career as a drummer, rather than the guitarist for whom he is well known.

In the early 1960s, he and his friend Bob Burns began to practice together, inspired by their common boyhood fantasies of being rock and roll superstars. Only one problem: they were both drummers, which was a concern. Rossington made the decision to devote his time and energy to the guitar. He’d have to work really hard to save up enough money to buy one, and then he’d have to learn how to play it once he got one. As fate would have it, his sister Carol began dating Lloyd Phillips, a talented guitarist, not long after this incident occurred.

Phillips assisted young Rossington in learning the majority of the fundamentals that a new player needed to master. The two friends quickly sought the help of another acquaintance, bass guitarist Larry Junstrom, to form the small amateur band known as You, Me and Him. By 1965, Rossington and Burns had joined forces with Allen Collins and Ronnie VanZant to form the group The Temptations. The wind didn’t stop blowing, and the stars didn’t shine any brighter in the sky, but the keeper of rock history couldn’t have missed the first meeting of what would become Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Black Crowes.

The band’s sound evolved over years of practice and numerous nightly performances in small pubs and clubs until it became what people hear when they listen to a CD containing classics from the band’s early days. Rossington, as a member of the Skynyrd, was well on his way to being famous by 1973. By 1976, the band’s popularity appeared to be unstoppable. When the plane transporting the band members crashed into a Mississippi swamp in 1977, the band’s career came to an abrupt halt. The members of Lynyrd Skynyrd were killed instantly as the jet crashed into the woods of the swamp. Ronnie VanZant, Steve Gaines, and his sister Cassie, as well as road manager Dean Kilpatrick, were killed that night in a car accident. The crash left Rossington as one of the fortunate survivors, although he did not survive the ordeal. He’d been shattered into a million pieces, literally.

His pelvic bone, several ribs, bones in his foot, both wrists, both arms, and both legs were all broken, as were his wrists, arms, and legs. Rossington and Collins formed the Rossington-Collins Band in 1980 after years of difficult recuperation. Collins and a couple of other former Skynyrd members also joined the group. The group’s debut album, Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere, was a commercial success, but things were still falling apart, and within a couple of years, after only one more album had been recorded, Rossington and Collins had severed ways with one another.

Rossington married and relocated to the mountains, leaving the hustle and bustle of the music industry far behind him until 1986, when he returned to it. By 1987, the band had reunited and embarked on a tribute tour. Eventually, Rossington joined on, and the ride lasted three years in total. In 1991, Rossington was involved in the recording of a new Lynyrd Skynyrd album, which was the band’s first since the plane tragedy to include brand-new songs. Another album was released, followed by concerts in the United States and Europe.
