Robbie Coltrane, one of Britain’s most famous comedians who was the president of his school’s debating society and received awards for his work, is now a movie star who has appeared in two James Bond films and the “Harry Potter” franchise.
On March 30, 1950, in Rutherglen, a suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, UK, Coltrane was born Anthony Robert McMillan. Jean Ross (Howie), his mother, was a pianist and teacher. Ian Baxter McMillan, his father, was a general surgeon who also worked for the police pathology department. Robbie liked art, music, movies, and automobiles when he was younger. His father’s books on medicine and crime were devoured by him. He made his acting debut on stage at Glenalmond College when he was 12 years old, delivering rants from “Henry V.” He was enamoured with Marlon Brando and Orson Welles at the time.
He majored in drawing, painting, and film at Glasgow Art School, then spent a year studying art at Edinburgh’s Moray House College of Education. In 1973, he directed a documentary called “Young Mental Health,” which won the Scottish Education Council’s Film Of The Year award. Due to his love of jazz, Robbie adopted the stage name Coltrane and started working as a stand-up comic in nightclubs, at the Edinburgh Festival, and as an actor with Edinburgh’s renowned Traverse Theatre.
Coltrane made his television debut as “Border Guard” in the BBC mini-series The Lost Tribe (1980), then starred in Death Watch as a limousine driver (1980). Subway Riders (1981), directed by renowned underground director Amos Poe, gave him his first leading role as Detective Fritz Langley in 1981.
He rose to prominence as a result of his roles in The Comic Strip series, Alfresco (1983), and the Comic Strip films The Supergrass (1985) and The Pope Must Die (1991), among others. Coltrane had a drinking habit at the time, consuming up to a bottle of whiskey per day. In 1986, he travelled to Mexico to be treated for obesity at a clinic. Robin Paine, his 15-year wife, left him in 1987, leaving her portrait in Coltrane’s stable.
