Andrea Martin was born in 1947 in Portland, Maine, to Sybil A. (née Manoogian) and John Papazian Martin (Armenian), who were already married at the time of her birth. She was the eldest of three children and the eldest daughter. Her paternal ancestors were Armenian immigrants from the Ottoman Empire who came to the United States in the 1920s. During her grandfather’s lifetime, the family’s name was changed from Papazian to Martin.
