American auto racing legend Anthony Joseph Foyt Jr. was born on January 16, 1935, and he raced in a wide variety of motorsports before retiring. He competes in a variety of open-wheel categories, including US Auto Club Champ cars, sprint cars, and midgets. He competed in NASCAR and USAC stock car racing. Over the course of his career, he won several prestigious sports car races. He has 159 career victories in USAC racing, and 67 in American championship racing, both records. In addition to his four Indianapolis 500 victories, Petty is the only driver in history to win the Daytona 500, the 24 Hours of Daytona, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Foyt won both the 1976 and 1977 seasons of the International Race of Champions. The 1964 Firecracker 400 and the 1972 Daytona 500 were NASCAR stock car races that he triumphed in. Foyt suffered significant injuries in three crashes and barely escaped a fourth. Many auto racing halls of fame have recognized Foyt for his achievements.

During the mid-1960s, Foyt made the transition from driver to team owner, managing a stable of race vehicles for himself and other competitors. After leaving the driver’s seat, he founded A. J. Foyt Enterprises, which has CART, IRL, and NASCAR teams under his control. His parents, Anthony (Tony) Foyt Sr. and Emma Evelyn Monk Foyt, gave birth to him in Houston, Texas. To pass the time, his father, a mechanic, bought and raced midget race cars. When A. J. Foyt was five years old, his father constructed him a little race car powered by a lawnmower motor. Tony recalled the time he and his wife left their son, A. J., then eleven, home alone with the family’s other race car in the backyard. When they returned, the boy had caused extensive damage to the house while driving the vehicle and had set the engine on fire. Despite his resentment, the elder Foyt acknowledged that A. J. probably had a future as a race car driver.
