Alessandro “Alex” Zanardi is a well-known Italian racing driver and paracyclist. In the late 1990s, he won back-to-back CART championships in North America. However, his career as a Formula One driver was not as fruitful. The fact that he has returned to compete despite losing both legs in a 2001 accident has earned him significant acclaim in recent years. In less than two years after the crash, he was back on the track, this time driving for BMW Team Italy-Spain in the FIA World Touring Car Championship from 2003 to 2009.

Zanardi changed gears and began competing in the sport of handcycling, a kind of cycling used in the Paralympics, with the intention of leading Italy at the 2012 Summer Paralympics. At the UCI World Road Para-Cycling Championships in September 2011, Zanardi earned his first senior international handcycling medal, the silver in the H4 category time trial. At the London Paralympics in September 2012, he won two gold medals and one silver in the individual H4 time trial and also the individual H4 road race.

On September 11th, 2012, he was included to the International Paralympic Committee’s list of the top 12 performances at the London Games. In addition to voicing Guido in the original English version of Cars, Zanardi also does so in the Italian dub. He returned for Cars 2 and Cars 3 to continue his recurring role.
