Allen Leech Bio

Kay and David Leech, CEOs of a computer systems company, were the parents of Leech. The third child in a family of four, he has an older brother Greg, a younger sister Alli, and a middle brother, Simon. At St. Michael’s College, he was educated. When Leech was 11, he was cast in a school performance of The Wizard of Oz as the Cowardly Lion and discovered how much he enjoyed performing on stage. When Peter McDonald reminded him that acting is a career on the final night of the show’s run, he immediately chose to become an actor.

Later, Leech’s teenage years were dominated by drama, away from his family life, and he relied on the support of drama and his parents to get through his schoolwork. After earning a small role in a Gate Theatre production of A Streetcar Named Desire in 1998, he was determined to pursue acting full time. It was later revealed that his parents had stipulated that he had to acquire a degree if he didn’t make it as an actor, and he completed a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Drama and Theatre Studies at Trinity College, Dublin.

The first important roles in his career came while he was still in Trinity, and he’s acknowledged to doing little coursework in order to focus on auditions and acting instead. As of February 2018, Leech and Jessica Blair Herman had confirmed their engagement. At the Alisal Ranch and Resort in Solvang, California, on January 5, 2019, they were married in an outdoor ceremony. In addition to Leech’s Downton Abbey co-stars, guests included Rami Malek, Gwilym Lee, and Lucy Boynton, from Bohemian Rhapsody.

The couple revealed in September 2019 that they were expecting their first child. In 1998, Leech made his professional theatrical debut in a production of A Streetcar Named Desire at the Gate Theatre.  While the Coen brothers walked backstage, a 16-year-old me followed behind.” At the Garter Lane Arts Centre, he played Willi in the Queen and Peacock. Tom Murphy’s “The Morning After Optimism” and “Da at the Abbey” followed Leech in subsequent years.

Following his part as Vincent, a gay fashion student in Cowboys and Angels, Leech went on to star in the 2004 cross-country caper picture Man About Dog. Leech was nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award for his performance as Shane Kirwan in the RTÉ series Love Is the Drug. Afterward, he played Willy in the TV series Legend, which tells the stories of three Irish families.. That role earned him an Irish Film and Television Award nomination in the category of Best Supporting Actor.

In 2007, Leech portrayed Marcus Agrippa, Octavian’s best soldier, and best friend, on HBO’s Rome. On March 25, 2011, Rewind premiered in Ireland. In 2010, he appeared on television as Francis Dereham, Catherine Howard’s erstwhile lover, in The Tudors. Tom Branson, the Downton Abbey chauffeur, was played by Leech in the ITV 2010 television series.

His dual convictions in socialism and Irish Republicanism clash with the British upper classes. In the fifth series of Primeval, he played the part of Sam Leonard, an officer. Additionally, Leech starred in The Sweeney, a 2012 film adaption. The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, was released in 2014. In 2005, U Magazine named Leech the sexiest Irish male. One of GQ’s 50 most stylish guys in the UK in 2015 was him. In 2017, Leech appeared in a stage version of Constellations with Ginnifer Goodwin in Los Angeles. Played at the Geffen Playhouse from June 14 until July 23, 2017.

Chris Leech was nominated for a SAG Award for his performance in Bohemian Rhapsody as Paul Prenter, Mercury’s manager and love interest during the course of the biopic, which was based on Freddie Mercury’s life. Leech re-appeared as Tom Branson in the 2019 film Downton Abbey, reprising his role. For Allen Leech, the end of “Downton Abbey” left him feeling a little underwhelmed. His character, Tom Branson, didn’t get the happy ending he deserved although many of the other great characters did.

I thought there were a lot of possibilities for him,” says Leech in a hotel suite in London’s Corinthia Hotel before the premiere of the long-awaited “Downton Abbey” film. You don’t want that, as an actor, after you’ve been playing this character for six years. “You’re looking for an end.” That decision made him happy since it allowed him to have this story arc in the movie. I don’t think Tom would have been able to perform the things he does in the movie if everything had been stitched up.”

The character of John Branson, a driver from Yorkshire, had been written by “Downton Abbey” writer Julian Fellowes when Leech first auditioned for the role. It was Fellowes’ request that Leech, who hails from Dublin, interpret the part in an Irish accent that sparked Leech’s interest. As a result, John changed his name to Tom, and the Crawleys hired the Irishman as their new driver in his place. Leech originally agreed to appear for three episodes, making his debut in season one’s fourth episode, where he was supposed to be sacked for having an affair with Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay).

As a “socialist, not a revolutionary,” Branson was introduced to Sybil and said, “I won’t always be a chauffeur,” in their first chat. Leech, at the time, had no idea how accurate that statement would prove to be. Branson and Sybil were eventually married by Fellowes and the show’s producers. Following Season 3’s conclusion, Leech assumed Brown Findlay had asked to depart the program. Instead, he committed to the show for the duration of his first long-term deal.

In the series, Fellowes says, “I felt Tom Branson was the one we hadn’t really settled on.” It had been some time since he’d been married again. He’s a decent fellow. I like him. When it comes to getting along with his late wife’s family after she passed away, he’s learned a lot. “That was something I was interested in doing.” Reading it for the first time made me question whether or not I was doing all of the things it described. Leech cracks a grin.  Leech cites “Downton Abbey” as a major factor in his rise to recognition, but he refuses to use the term “famous.”

As the show progressed, he began to be recognized on the London Underground, but he has never stopped using public transportation. It’s common for him to take the subway rather than the car service in New York City on press days. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” in which Leech portrayed Queen manager Paul Prenter, had an outstanding award run and Leech went from London to Los Angeles to get married (his wife, Jessica Blair Herman, recently announced her first pregnancy). In L.A., Leech says, “It’s vital to not get too tangled up in that,” citing the fact that most of his friends aren’t in the entertainment sector.

Growing my career in London has made a significant impact on my life. My parents, on the other hand, will never allow me to grow out of my boots. Before “Downton,” she famously brought me to a friend by saying, “This is my son Allen, he could have been an architect.” The character of Paul Prenter was the first one for which Leech was cast without having to go through the audition process. Producing director Denis O’Sullivan suggested he audition for the wicked role of Prenter after he initially read for Jim Hutton, a considerably minor role. Leech says he was apprehensive about what he saw.

As much as you’re proving to the casting director and others that you’re the appropriate person for the job, you’re also proving to yourself.” You’re the one making the decisions and displaying your abilities. Suddenly someone says, “We want you to do this job and we trust you with this role,” which was all I ever knew, and suddenly someone is saying. I wanted to do it well and prove to them that they made the right decision in hiring me. It’s as though I’ve stepped up my game.”

Downton Abbey, a Focus Features production, stars Dame Maggie Smith as The Dowager Countess of Grantham and Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary Talbot. Featured Image: Jaap Buitendijk / 2019 Focus Pictures, LLC The storey of how ‘Downton Abbey’ came to be: zeal, perseverance, and the right moment Leech’s experience in “Bohemian Rhapsody” was immediately connecting, much like the actors of “Downton Abbey,” who remain firm friends and meet up for a reunion dinner hosted by Jim Carter in London every year.

Rami Malek and Lucy Boynton had a drink at the London Edition the night before this interview, in fact. And he has the ability to mimic Malek’s voice to a tee. “Downton” co-star Dame Maggie Smith can also be effectively imitated by Leech. Director Bryan Singer was fired and replaced during the filming of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which was credited to Dexter Fletcher, the director of “Rocketman.” Leech recalls that “Bohemian Rhapsody” had “trouble as a production.”

“Even before the success, which blew everyone’s minds and established us,… And it will be one of the best experiences I ever have as an actor because of it.” Leech made a CBS pilot, “Surveillance,” after finishing “Downton Abbey,” but the network rejected it. So he’s still on the hunt for the next big thing. The actress, a graduate of Trinity College Dublin’s drama and theatre program who moved to London in 2004, is particularly drawn to Irish storylines. A short film adaptation of Claire Keegan’s short story “Walk the Blue Fields” is in the works, and Leech intends to direct it.

It’s hard for Leech to acknowledge that he ever expected this level of fame when he was just 15 years old when he starred alongside Frances McDormand in “A Streetcar Named Desire” at the Gate Theatre in Dublin. There is no guarantee that he will succeed, he admits. “As an actor, I believe that’s critical. I’m always anxious about the next job, as I was back then. I’m not the only one.

Do the jobs I’ve done make me wonder how I ever thought I’d get them?  When you’re a child from Dublin who watches the Oscars, you never expect to be invited to any of the ceremonies. When asked again, he takes a moment to ponder. In retrospect, had I ever imagined myself doing these things? No. I find it ironic that life pulls you on this path,” he said.
