Andrew Rannells Bio

Rannells was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, where he was raised by his parents, Charlotte and Ronald Rannells. Mr. Smith is the fourth of five siblings, the other three of whom are sisters and the oldest of whom is the oldest of the older brothers. Originally from Omaha, Randall Rannells attended Our Lady of Lourdes grade school before transferring to Creighton Preparatory School, an all-boys Roman Catholic high school located in the same city. Hanscom Park is a neighborhood in Omaha where he grew up with his family and where he still resides.

His early theatre experiences included seminars at the Emmy Gifford Children’s Theater and performances at venues such as the Omaha Community Playhouse, the Firehouse Dinner Theatre, and the Dundee Dinner Theatre, among others. He currently resides in Omaha. Rannells made his stage debut when he was 11 years old in a production of A Christmas Carol. He worked on community theatre plays alongside fellow Omahan and Creighton Prep alumnus Conor Oberst, who was also a collaborator.

He did voice-over work for commercials and participated in a 1996 spoof of the movie Grease when he shared screen time with Amy Adams. After graduating from high school in 1997, he moved to New York City, where he studied theatre for two years at Marymount Manhattan College before starting to audition full-time and landing performing roles. Rannells is a gay man who is not ashamed of his sexual orientation.

As Rannells has indicated, he has been aware of his sexual orientation since he was a teenager. Only after he turned eighteen and revealed his sexual orientation to his family did he realize that “no one was surprised.” Aside from that, he came out to his theatrical friends but not to the rest of the male students at his all-girls Catholic high school.

Tuc Watkins, a well-known actress, has been in a relationship with him since the beginning of 2019. When they were cast as a duo in the Broadway production of The Boys in the Band the year before, the two quickly became fast friends and collaborators. Both actors returned to their respective roles for the Netflix film adaptation of the show, and they also collaborated on the planned Black Monday feature picture, which will be released in 2020.

Having grown up participating in community theatre, Rannells began his professional acting career as a teenager by doing voice-over work for television commercials. DIC Entertainment hired him in the mid-1990s when he answered a casting call in Omaha. He had previously worked for the animation production firm. In the years that followed, he was cast in a number of their television shows, most notably in a role as the main character’s voice.

His work in the medium continued for several years while he was pursuing his theatrical ambitions in the traditional sense. During his time with the New York City-based production company 4Kids Entertainment from 2001 to 2004, Rannells voiced several English dubs of anime series, including Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, and also served on the voice-directing teams for Kirby: Right Back at Ya! and Sonic X. Rannells is a native of New York City. Rannells was born in New York City and grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, where he currently lives.

His first professional theatrical role was as James in the touring production of Pokémon Live!, which he performed from September 2000 to August 2001. This was one of his first professional theatre roles. He will tell you that if you ask him about his experience in 2014, he would have liked to star in a pornographic or sexually explicit film instead and that he only agreed to do the job because of the money.

Before winning his first Broadway role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Rannells appeared in a number of regional theatre productions throughout the country. Before winning his first Broadway role, he appeared in a number of other productions, including Miss Saigon and Thoroughly Modern Millie.

At the B. Iden Payne Awards, which recognize outstanding achievements in the Austin theatrical community, he was recognized for his performance as Hedwig at the Zachary Scott Theatrical Center in Austin, Texas, in 2002. He made his Broadway debut in 2002 with the Broadway production of Hairspray.

A handful of regional venues then became the next stop on his tour schedule. It was in Jersey Boys: The First National Tour, in which he played Bob Gaudio, that he received his first significant stage experience. It was on December 6, 2008, in the Canadian city of Toronto that he gave his final performance as part of the tour. In January 2009, he returned to the Broadway stage, this time in the role of Gaudio in the production of the musical The Sound of Music.

He received his big break in 2011 when he was cast as Elder Price in South Park writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s musical The Book of Mormon, which was written by Avenue Q composer Robert Lopez, who also wrote the song “The Book of Mormon.” Rannells has since appeared in several other musicals, including the critically acclaimed The Book of Mormon. A nomination for the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical was made in his honor as a result of his outstanding performance.

A Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album was presented to him as a result of his performance on The Original Broadway Cast Recording of the musical. Like Elijah on the HBO television series Girls, he was one of his most well-known roles, and it was also one of his most well-known performances overall. When Jonathan Groff was abroad on pre-arranged filming commitments, he stepped in to play King George III in the Broadway production of Hamilton from October 27 to November 29, 2015. “Whizzer Brown” was Rannells’ character in the Broadway revival of Falsettos, directed by James Lapine and starring James Lapine and Rannells.

The 50th-anniversary celebration of the play, was only staged for a brief amount of time in the theatre. Tony Award nominations for the Best Revival of a Play were received for this production. He reprised his role (along with the rest of the revival cast) from the television series for the Netflix movie adaptation, which will premiere on September 30, 2020. Randall Rannells is now starring in the television drama Black Monday, in which he plays a key role as Blair Pfaff, one of the show’s primary characters.

The first episode of the Showtime series premiered on January 20, 2019, and it has been airing ever since. It was announced in April 2019 that the sitcom would return for a second season, with the first episode premiering on March 15, 2020. It was announced in October 2020 that the sitcom will be revived for a third season, with the first episode premiering in January 2021. Among other things, it has pieces about his background in Omaha, Nebraska, and his years spent in New York prior to making his Broadway debut in Hairspray in 2005, among other topics. In the episode named How Do You Remember Me from Season 2 of Modern Love, he made his directorial debut, and it was a huge success. He also wrote the episode, which was based on an essay he had written for an opinion column in the New York Times a few years earlier (which also appeared in his memoir).
