Wilkes-Krier, started studying the piano at the University of Michigan School of Music when she was only four years old. He attributes his lifelong appreciation for music to early family vacations to Midnight Mass. His primary school teacher gave him the nickname Andrew W.K. to set him apart from two other students named Andrew: Andrew Cohen and Andrew Gilchrist.
