American R&B and soul vocalist Annette Beard (born Annette Helton; sometimes credited as Annette Sterling) goes under a few different names. Beard rose to fame in the 1960s as a founding member of the girl group Martha and the Vandellas and via her association with Motown. Right now, Beard is most recognized as a member of the band The Original Vandellas. Annette Beard began her musical career as a young child, singing in church choirs with her mother and father when they moved to Detroit, Michigan, from Ann and Roger El Wood Beard[1]. She was fourteen when Edward “Pops” Larkins, who had already formed a successful male singing group, held tryouts for a female group at the local YMCA.

Annette, then only 14 years old, impressed him with a single note and in 1957, she and her friends Rosalind Ashford and Gloria Williams formed the first iteration of The Del-Phis. The band played at community events, proms, YMCA fundraisers, and backyard barbecues. Annette, a timid child, was OK with taking a backseat to the group’s original lead vocalist, Gloria Williams. In 1960, a member left the group, and Martha Reeves, another vocalist from Detroit, took their place. Annette and Rosalind Ashford graduated from high school in 1961; Annette from Southeastern and Rosalind Ashford from Wilbur Wright. Now that they had finished school, they needed to seriously consider their future and the paths available to them.
