The Phoenix metro region is home to the Arizona Coyotes, a professional ice hockey franchise. The Coyotes are a National Hockey League  team that represent the Western Conference’s Central Division. They were one of four franchises admitted into the National Hockey League on June 22, 1979, after the World Hockey Association had suspended operations. The Winnipeg Jets were established on December 27, 1971, as the WHA’s Winnipeg Jets. On July 1, 1996, the Jets relocated to Phoenix and adopted the name Phoenix Coyotes. On June 27, 2014, the name of the team was changed to Arizona Coyotes.  On July 29, 2019, Alex Meruelo took the majority ownership position.

The team’s previous ownership caused instability. When former owner Jerry Moyes gave up the Phoenix Coyotes after filing for bankruptcy, the NHL took over the team in 2009. The club was under the NHL’s control until 2013, when new owners were discovered who were prepared to keep it in Arizona. Despite having a tense working relationship with the Glendale, Arizona, suburb of Phoenix, the Coyotes were able to negotiate a year-to-year contract to use the arena through the end of the 2021–22 season.  This one is the oldest NHL team that has never participated in the Stanley Cup Finals.
