In Santa Monica, California, Armand Douglas Hammer was born to parents who were also artists on August 28, 1986, and raised there until his death in 2011. The late Mr. Hammer’s mother, Dru Ann (née Mobley), worked as a loan officer for a local bank, and his father, Michael Armand Hammer, founded and owns a number of successful businesses, including Knoedler Publishing and Armand Hammer Productions, which produces films and television shows. Mr. Hammer is the son of Dru Ann and Michael Armand Hammer.

In addition to being a musician, his younger brother Viktor is also a musician. Hammer describes himself as “half Jewish,” according to his own words. His paternal great-grandfather was the oil tycoon and philanthropist Armand Hammer; Armand’s parents were Jewish immigrants to the United States from the (then) Russian Empire, and they were of Ukrainian Jewish descent; Julius Hammer was from Odesa (now in Ukraine, but at the time in the Russian Empire), and he was the founder of the Communist Party in New York.

She was born in Russia to a tsarist captain and raised in the United States with her family, and she was Armie’s paternal great-grandmother, who was the Russian-born actress and singer Olga Vadimovna “Vadina” (from Sevastopol). Apart from being born in Texas, his paternal grandmother and mother brought him up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he currently resides. Previously, Hammer resided in the Highland Park neighborhood of Dallas for several years before relocating to the city.

When he was seven years old, his family went to the Cayman Islands, where they resided for five years until relocating to Los Angeles to establish a permanent residence. Later, after attending Faulkner’s Academy in Governor’s Harbour, Cayman Islands, and Grace Christian Academy in Grand Cayman, he went on to attend Los Angeles Baptist High School in the San Fernando Valley, after which he graduated from there (a school built by his father at West Bay, Grand Cayman).

In order to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, he dropped out of high school in the eleventh grade and never returned. Following that, he enrolled in university studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. After deciding to drop out of school and pursue acting, Hammer claims that his parents abandoned him at first. But he asserts that they have now become supportive and proud of his accomplishments.

A small cameo appearance on television episodes such as Arrested Development, Veronica Mars, Gossip Girl, Reaper, and Desperate Housewives kicked out Hammer’s professional acting career, which progressed to more prominent roles later on. After appearing in a supporting part in Flicka (2006), he went on to co-star in the psychological thriller Blackout (2008), which was his first entry into the entertainment industry.

Billy: The Early Years, in which he portrays Christian preacher Billy Graham, was his first major film role, and it was released in October 2008, making him the first prominent actor to make his debut in a leading role. Following the release of the film, Hammer was nominated by Mediaguide for a “Faith and Values Award,” which is given out in the Grace Award category.

The Grace Award is granted to the actor or actress who has given the most inspiring performance in a film or television program. Hammer was cast as Batman/Bruce Wayne in the planned superhero film Justice League: Mortal, which was set to be released in 2007. Hammer was hand-picked by director George Miller after a lengthy search for the part. Due to financial constraints, the film, which was to be directed by Miller, was ultimately canceled indefinitely.

There were several circumstances that contributed to the film’s cancellation, including an impending Writers Guild of America strike in 2007–08 as well as protracted fiscal rebate negotiations with the Australian government. During the 2009 Seattle International Film Festival, he appeared as Harrison Bergeron in the film 2081, which was based on the short story of the same name by author Kurt Vonnegut.

The film received its world debut at the festival. It was in David Fincher’s The Social Network, which was released in 2010, that Hammer made his cinematic debut. The film was about the founding of Facebook and was directed by Fincher. Onset, he played Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, identical twin brothers who were played by actor Josh Pence, who served as a body double for the twins during the filming.

When Hammer’s visage was overlaid over Pence’s during post-production, the producers used computer-generated imagery to achieve the effect that they desired (CGI). In a few instances, they also utilized split-screen photography to great effect. As part of his preparation for the film’s production, Hammer revealed that he had to learn how to row on both sides of a boat in order to play the twins, who are world rowing champions.

A 10-month intense twin boot camp helped Hammer and Pence prepare for their roles, and it was intended to “drill the subtle gestures and speech patterns that the Winklevosses would have established during two decades of genetic equality.” Hammer and Pence also went through a 10-month grueling twin boot camp in order to prepare for their respective roles. Time magazine’s Richard Corliss hailed Hammer’s portrayal of the twins as “an astonishingly subtle trompe l’oeil of special effects,” which was one of the first pieces of critical accolades he received for the film. The Toronto Film Critics Association recognized Hammer’s work in the film by awarding him the Best Supporting Actor Award.

J. Edgar, directed by Clint Eastwood in 2011, was his next role, in which he played Clyde Tolson, the FBI’s first Associate Director, which was his next role after that. It was based on the extended career of J. Edgar Hoover, who was played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the film’s main role. The biographical drama was written by Dustin Lance Black and directed by Steven Spielberg.

In general, the performances garnered favorable reviews, with David Denby of The New Yorker praising Hammer’s “charming” portrayal of the title character and Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter applauding the film’s “excellent” performance.

McCarthy goes on to praise the on-screen chemistry between DiCaprio and Hammer, particularly in their portrayal of the often speculated romantic relationship between their characters, stating that “…the way the homoerotic undertones and impulses are handled is one of the best things about the film; the emotional dynamics, given all of the social and political factors at play, feel entirely credible, and the DiCaprio and Hammer excel during tense scenes betwixt and between their characters.”

The film received mainly negative reviews, in part because of the director and narrative, but also because of the cosmetics used to age DiCaprio and Hammer’s characters, which attracted particular notice. Both actors were nominated for Screen Actors Guild Awards this year.

As a supporting character in Boots Riley’s dark comedy Sorry to Bother You, Hammer performed alongside Lakeith Stanfield, Steven Yeun, and Tessa Thompson in the previous year. Film Journal International critic Tomris Laffly praised Hammer’s portrayal of Steve Lift as “irresistibly hilarious” as well as an “abominable villain” who snorted cocaine and smoked marijuana.
