American singer, songwriter, and record producer Kenneth Brian Edmonds(born April 10, 1959) is best known by his stage name Babyface. Over the course of his career, he has written or produced over 26 R&B singles that reached #1 and have received 12 Grammys. On NME’s list of the 50 Best Producers of All Time, he came in at number 20. Edmonds was born to Marvin and Barbara Edmonds on April 10, 1959, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Barbara worked as an operator in a pharmaceutical facility. Edmonds, the fifth of six brothers (two of whom, Melvin and Kevon Edmonds, would later form the band After 7; Kevon would go on to have a moderately successful solo career), attended North Central High School in Indianapolis, where he would often use songwriting as an outlet for his repressed emotions as a shy teenager.

Edmonds’ father passed away from lung cancer while he was in eighth grade, leaving his mother to care for her three kids. Later, Edmonds met funk singer Bootsy Collins, who gave him the nickname “Babyface” because of how young he looked. In addition, he was a member of the band Manchild, with whom he played guitar. He was a member of the Deele, a mellow funk, and R&B band, playing keyboards and guitar (which also included drummer Antonio “L.A.” Reid, with whom he would later form a successful writing and producing partnership). In 1983, he composed “Slow Jam” for the R&B group Midnight Star, one of his first notable credits as a composer for other singers. Midnight Star’s double-platinum album from 1983 included the song. The album “There Is No Parking On The Dance Floor” Until 1988, when he and Reid both quit the Deele, Babyface remained a member of the band.
