It was in the city of Piacenza that the future Italian politician Giuseppe “Beppe” Gabbiani was born. This affluent Italian spent seven years karting before attempting Formula 3 in 1977. At Paul Ricard, the opening round of the 1977 European F3 Championship, he took the checkered flag as the winner in his Chevron-Toyota. After placing second at Monza and third at Croix-en-Ternois and third at Knutstorp, he ended the season in fourth place in the Championship. Beppe, feeling confident after his win, jumped to Formula 2 with the Trivellato Racing Chevron-Ferrari as teammate to motorcycling hero Giacomo Agostini. But the car was old, and he finished in the top six of only one race. To make up for the absence of the injured Vittorio Brambilla in the final two races of the season, he borrowed a Surtees and, although driving it, he did not earn a starting position in either event.
He joined the March works team in Formula 2 in 1979, but he frequently wrecked due to trying too hard. He tried again in a hired Shadow at a non-championship Formula One race at Imola, but he was disqualified. However, he finished the year on a high note, placing second in the F2 races at Mugello and Misano and finishing the year in fifth place in the European Championship. His 1980 transfer to the Maurer club was disastrous, as he finished with a single point despite getting the season off to a slow start. He joined the Osella F1 squad in 1981, but his inexperience showed immediately. Most races he didn’t even make the starting lineup for, and the three he did, he had to retire from.
