One of the most successful drivers in NASCAR history and a member of one of the sport’s most famous—and tragic—families were Bobby Allison, an American stock-car racer. He won the NASCAR championship in 1983 and continued to compete at the top levels of the sport for another twenty-five years. Despite his parents’ wishes, Allison became involved in racing throughout his high school years. After finishing high school, he moved to Alabama in quest of more competitive racing. The “Alabama Gang,” a gang of drivers based out of business outside Birmingham, was founded by Allison, his brother Donnie, and their buddy Red Farmer.

The year 1965 saw Allison’s debut in the Grand National Series, where he went on to win his maiden race the following year. His 84 career wins were enough for third place on NASCAR’s all-time record, and despite only winning one title, he retired like a champion.
