Boris Franz Becker (born November 22, 1967, in Leimen, near Heidelberg, West Germany, is a German tennis player best known for his record-setting victory in the men’s singles event at Wimbledon on July 7, 1985, at the age of only 17. In doing so, he set a number of records, including those for the youngest male winner of a men’s singles Grand Slam tournament and the youngest winner of any Grand Slam tournament (a mark lowered by four months when Michael Chang won the French Open in 1989). Becker learned to play tennis as a kid at the local club (Blau-Weiss Tennisklub) his architect father constructed. He began playing competitively at age eight and devoted practically all of his time to tennis by the time he was twelve.

He left school in the tenth grade (or form) and was educated by the West German Tennis Federation, where his primary instructor was Günther Bosch, a German of Romanian descent. Becker made her international tennis debut in the 1985 Wimbledon Championships at the tender age of 17. He served well and played aggressively enough to go through his opponents and into the finals, where he eventually won in four sets against Kevin Curren. Being at his best on the fast grass court, he repeated as Wimbledon champion in 1986 and 1989, and also reached the finals in 1988, 1990, 1991, and 1995.
