Brandon Sanderson Bio

Brandon Sanderson was born December 1975 in Lincoln. Brandon loved reading as a child, but he soon lost interest in the titles suggested to him. By junior high, he had never even cracked a book. In 8th grade, an eminent teacher Mrs. Reader gave Brandon Dragonsbane to Barbara Hambly. Brandon enjoyed the book so much that he went on a search for something similar. He found such authors as Melanie Rawn and Robert Jordan, Anne McCaffrey and Orson Scott card. Brandon was an avid reader throughout junior high and high school. He loved epic fantasy so much, he tried writing it. He says his first attempts at writing epic fantasy were terrible. Brandon began his studies at Brigham Young University in 1994 as a Biochemistry major.

He was a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from 1995 to 1997, and took time off from his studies. Brandon often claims that he realized he missed chemistry, but that he loved writing. Brandon returned to BYU and became an English major much to the dismay his mother who had always hoped that he would become doctor. Brandon started writing seriously when he took a night-shift job at a hotel. This allowed him to continue his work while at work. He attended school during the day and worked nights to support his education. It made for a very difficult social life but he did finish seven novels in his undergraduate years. Brandon received many rejection letters and submitted manuscripts to be published. He was a committed writer despite this.

This update is the result of a conversation Sanderson had with Christopher Paolini at TorCon in June, during which the authors discussed Rhythm of War as well as To Sleep In a Sea of Stars. Rhythm of War is the last five-book cycle of The Stormlight Archive. He said that he would tell Paolini the ending scene or the entire book. (The Eragon author stated that he would take the Cosmere “to the grave,” so it’s not necessary to ask). A character moment was one of the pillars in my outline since the beginning. This was the scene I was working on. Only two to three scenes were core pillars. It felt like it had landed, according to my beta readers. This moment won’t happen again untilTor Books will publish Book 4 ,

Sanderson wanted to create an epic-length series that didn’t require readers to purchase a large number of books. Sanderson hides all connections to his works in each book, creating an “hidden epic”.

He estimates that at most 40 books could complete the cosmere series. The story of the Cosmomere centers on Adonalsium, a mysterious being who lived in Yolen. Adonalsium was murdered by sixteen conspirators. This caused its power to shatter into 16 different Shards. One case was where the Shards Ruin, Preservation and Preservation collaborated to create a planet with its inhabitants (Scadrial as seen in MistbornEach Shard is assigned an Intent. For example, Ambition or Honor. A Vessel’s personality can be altered over time to make them more compatible with their Intent. Odium shattered or killed several shards. He created the Dor by accidentally splintering Devotion, Dominion and Sel. Odium, who splintered Honor on Roshar, brought about the Everstorm, and the True Desolation. In the Threnody system, he also Splintered Ambition. Hoid is mentioned or seen in many Cosmere books. He uses the Shardworlds’ inhabitants to advance his unknown agenda.
