Brian May is an English musician, songwriter, astrophysicist, and the band Queen’s famed guitarist. With his characteristic hairdo that violates the stereotype of a scientist, he became a legend in the genre of ‘rock’ music, selling more albums than ‘The Beatles’. May began playing the guitar at the age of seven, when he formed his first band at school. It was remarkable for his family and friends at the time, who recognised his enthusiasm for music and science, which fit him perfectly.
He then pursued a PhD in Astrophysics at Imperial College, London, before abandoning it to capitalise on the popularity acquired by his legendary rock band, ‘Queen’. He returned to college after 30 years to complete his PhD and has continued to perform live over the world.
Born in London’s Hampton Brian Harold May was Harold and Ruth May’s only child.He attended Hampton Grammar School and co-founded his first band with Tim Staffell in 1984.
He earned eleven GCE Ordinary Levels and three A-levels before enrolling at Imperial College, London, to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Mathematics.
May and Tim Stafell established the band ‘Smile’ in 1968, along with drummer Roger Taylor. After Staffell’s departure, the band split after two years.
