Brian Schatz Bio
Brian Schatz, full name Brian Emanuel Schatz (born October 20, 1972 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States), is an American politician who was appointed to the United States Senate from Hawaii in 2012 as a Democrat and won a 2014 special election.
Schatz was born in Michigan and relocated to Hawaii with his family when he was two years old. After graduating from Punahou School, President Barack Obama’s alma mater, he studied philosophy at Claremont, California’s Pomona College (B.A., 1994). He participated in the study-abroad programme as a student there, spending a term at a school in Kenya.
Schatz returned to Hawaii following graduation. He taught at Punahou and then worked for a variety of nonprofit organisations, most notably as CEO (2002–10) of a Honolulu-based community service agency. He sought and was elected to the Hawaii House of Representatives in 1998, a position he maintained until 2006.
He married Linda Kwok, an architect, during this time period, and the pair later had two children. Schatz served as chairman of the Democratic Party of Hawaii from 2008 to 2011 following an unsuccessful 2006 run for a seat in the United States House of Representatives. He was elected lieutenant governor of Hawaii in 2010.
Sen. Daniel Inouye recommended that Hawaii’s governor, Neil Abercrombie, nominate Colleen Hanabusa, who was then sitting in the United States House of Representatives, to his seat prior to his death in 2012. Abercrombie chose Schatz instead, and he was sworn in on December 27, 2012.
Schatz won a special election in 2014 after defeating Hanabusa by a razor-thin margin in the primary. Schatz had a reputation as a liberal Democrat throughout his tenure in the Senate, voting with his party on the majority of issues. He took a particular interest in alternative and renewable energy, taking the lead on climate change legislation. He was also involved in efforts to keep college costs down and, as a member of the House Committee on Indian Affairs, he championed the interests of Hawaiian indigenous.
In the 114th Congress, he was appointed as the ranking Democrat on the Senate Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet, which championed net neutrality legislation requiring that all data on the Internet be treated similarly.
The Founding Fathers envisioned the Senate as a check on the popularly elected House of Representatives. As a result, each state, regardless of size or population, is represented equally. Additionally, until the Constitution’s Seventeenth Amendment (1913), election to the Senate was indirect, through state legislatures. They are currently directly elected by state voters.
The Senate, along with the House of Representatives, is jointly responsible for all legislative activity in the United States. To be valid, a congressional act must be approved by both houses. The Senate is endowed with significant powers under the Constitution’s “advice and consent” provisions (Article II, section 2): ratification of treaties requires a two-thirds majority of all senators present, while approval of important public appointments, such as cabinet members, ambassadors, and Supreme Court justices, requires a simple majority. Additionally, the Senate adjudicates impeachment proceedings launched in the House of Representatives, with conviction requiring a two-thirds majority.
