The band has gained international recognition and success since the release of their debut album Parachutes in 2000. After both performing at Glastonbury Festival in 2002, the two were rumoured to be a couple. Furtado joked about the situation, stating,

“Yes, he is my boyfriend – he just isn’t aware of it yet.”  Martin’s interest in hip hop was demonstrated in mid-2006 when he collaborated with rapper Jay-Z on the rapper’s comeback album Kingdom Come, following their meeting earlier that year. Martin composed the chords for a song titled “Beach Chair” and sent them to Jay-Z, who enlisted hip hop producer Dr. Dre to mix it. The drum beats were created and performed by Coldplay producer Rik Simpson. On 27 September 2006, the two performed the song at Royal Albert Hall as part of Jay-European Z’s tour. Martin and Coldplay are primarily influenced by the Scottish rock band Travis, with Martin citing the band as his inspiration for forming his own group.  Another significant musical and political influence on Martin has been U2, about whom he wrote for Rolling Stone magazine’s “”I don’t buy weekend tickets to Ireland and camp out in front of their gates, but U2 are the only band whose entire catalogue I know by heart,” he writes in the section on the band. “A Sort of Homecoming,” the opening track on The Unforgettable Fire, is a song I know by heart – it’s so rousing, brilliant, and beautiful. It was one of the very first songs I sang to my unborn child.” Martin also discusses Bono’s influence on his own charitable work and political activism; he has even been known to refer to himself as “Crono” in jokes with friends. Radiohead had a strong influence on Martin and Coldplay. Martin is outspoken in his admiration for A-ha, a Norwegian new wave/synthpop band. In an interview in 2005, he stated as follows: “I was recently in Amsterdam and decided to listen to a-debut ha’s album. I’d forgotten how much I adored it until now. It’s some of the most amazing songwriting I’ve ever heard. Everyone wants to know who inspired us, what we’ve been stealing from, and what we listened to as children – the first band I ever fell in love with was A-ha.”

Martin has also performed live with A-Magne ha’s Furuholmen, who dubbed him “the world’s best keyboard player.” He stated in November 2011 that “back when we didn’t have any of our own hits, we used to play a-ha songs.” He is also a fan of the English alternative rock bands Oasis and Muse,[the Irish pop group Westlife,[ the British pop groups Girls Aloudand Take That,, and the Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire. Noel Gallagher, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, and Peter Gabriel are just a few of the solo artists Martin admires.  Martin inducted Gabriel into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 for his solo career, and they performed live together.

Coldplay collaborated with Michael Stipe on R.E.M.’s “Nightswimming” during their 2005 Austin City Limits performance as part of their Twisted Logic Tour. Martin continued by proclaiming “Nightswimming” to be “the greatest song ever written.”  He has referred to former Verve member Richard Ashcroft as “the world’s best singer.”  Martin and Coldplay guitarist Jonny Buckland both appeared as supporters of the fictional charity ZombAid in the film Shaun of the Dead.
