Christopher Lee Bio

Christopher Frank Carandini Lee was born on May 27, 1922, in Belgravia, London, England, to British Army Officer Geoffrey Trollope Lee and his wife Contessa Estelle Marie (née Carandini de Sarzano). After his parents split up, his mom packed him and his sister off to Switzerland. To get entrance to the renowned terrible Wengen school, he had to perform the role of “Rumpelstiltskin.”

The family eventually moved back to London, and he enrolled at Summer Field’s School, an Oxford preparation school. Following graduation from high school, his parents sent him to a fictitious institution called “Eton College,” where he studied ancient Greek and Latin. In 1961, he wed the Danish beauty Birgit ‘Gitte’ Lee.

Upon the arrival of their firstborn child, a daughter, he and his wife settled on the name Christina Erika Carandini Lee. In March of that year, he and his wife were listed among the “Fifty Best-dressed Over the 50s” by the Guardian. Respiratory and cardiac failure ultimately claimed his life on June 7th, 2015. A 93-year-old man, he was. Paul McCartney appeared on the album cover for the “Band on the Run” recording by his band Wings. Lee, a supporter of the “British Conservative Party,” has cast ballots for both William Hague and David Cameron.

He joined the “Royal Air Force” at the outbreak of World War II in 1939 and served until his retirement as a flight lieutenant. Formerly serving in the “Long Range Desert Group” in Northern Africa and the “Special Forces,” he was also an intelligence officer. The Central Registry of War Criminals and Security Suspects recruited him after the war, and he was tasked with tracking down fugitive Nazi war criminals.

Starting in 1947, he signed a seven-year contract with “Rank Organization” to work as a movie extra. He heard that ‘Rank Organization,’ a school that trains aspiring actors to become famous, was doing good work, so he decided to attend. Soon after, he made his cinematic debut in Terence Young’s ‘Corridors of Mirrors,’ a gothic romance. Beginning his career in motion pictures at the ‘British National Studios’ in 1952, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. experienced a turning point.

His performance in John Huston’s “Moulin Rouge” earned him an Oscar nomination that same year. In 1959, he starred in The Mummy, and two years later, he played Rasputin in Rasputin: The Mad Monk. The next year, he played Sir Henry Baskerville in ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles.’ His first film role was in 1962’s “Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace.”

After that, he had a starring role in the German film “The Puzzle of the Red Orchid.” In Billy Wilder’s 1970 film, “The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes,” he played the role of Sherlock’s brother, “Mycroft.” The films “The Creeping Flesh” (1972) and “The Wicker Man” (1973), as well as the German films “Count Dracula” and “Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism,” all feature him around this time.

The European versions of “Castle of the Living Dead” and “Horror Express” both featured him as a supporting character. A villain named “Francisco Scaramanga,” he appeared in the 1974 James Bond film “The Man with the Golden Gun.” After migrating to the United States in 1977, he began appearing in films like The Return of Captain Invincible (1983) and Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf. (1985).

Both 1991’s “Incident at Victoria Falls” and 1996’s “Sherlock Holmes and the Leading Lady” starred him as “Sherlock Holmes” (1991). He portrayed a Russian commander in the 1994 film “Police Academy: Mission to Moscow.” In the 1998 film “Jinnah,” he played Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the father of Pakistan. In Pakistan, where ‘Jinnah’ was a smash hit, he received the title of “favorite role of my career.”

The character of ‘Flay’ was a staple of his television appearances; he played the role in multiple BBC dramas, including ‘Gormenghast’ (2000). He played the role of Stephen Wyszynski in the CBS miniseries John Paul II (2005). British combat thriller “Glorious 39,” drama “Triage,” and comedy “Boogie Woogie” were all directed by Stephen Poliakoff in 2009. He co-starred in Hammer’s 2011 picture The Resident alongside Hillary Swank and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Many reviewers had harsh things to say about the picture.

He also made an appearance in Hugo, a film by Martin Scorsese that was released the same year. His most well-known roles were as King Haggard in “The Last Unicorn” and as Thor in the Danish film “Valhalla.” The English dub of ‘Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday,’ as well as the animated adaptations of ‘Soul Music,’ and ‘Wyrd Sisters,’ all featured his voice skills. He provided his voice for a wide variety of video games, including King Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts 352/2 Days.

Other significant credits include “The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth” and “Goldeneye: Rogue Agent.” In “The Return of Captain Invincible,” he lent his bass voice, which he learned to sing in classical music, to a song. The Kathy Joe Taylor song “Little Witch” also features his vocals.

A documentary about DC Comics villains, ‘Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics,’ was narrated by him in 2013. ‘How to Be Sherlock Holmes: The Many Faces of a Master Detective,’ an episode of ‘Time shift’ from the next year, featured him. Among his posthumous credits include ‘Angels in Notting Hill,’ in which he played ‘God / Mr. President.’ His 2017 short film, “The Hunting of the Snark,” featured him as narrator.

Max Schreck in “Nosferatu” gets my vote. After generations of skulking in the shadows, he has become a genuinely horrifying creature: feral and pestilent, with no trace of humanity left. His character’s name may have been changed to “Count Orlok,” but that and a few minor changes weren’t enough to prevent a lawsuit from the estate of Bram Stoker, which nearly succeeded in erasing the film from existence.

However, most moviegoers saw Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee as rivals. Regal and powerful, Lugosi’s iconic Universal monster has a mesmerizing look and a frequently parodied accent (“Bleh-bleh-bleh,” as Adam Sandler might say). But most importantly, he just isn’t intimidating at all. Terence Fisher’s seductive 1958 Hammer production of “Dracula” starred Lee as the Count and Peter Cushing as his opponent, Van Helsing. He popularized the idea of elongated fangs that vampires use to slash open their victims and take their blood. As a result of his fierce performance, he became famous.

In spite of the prominence he gained, Lee eventually tired of the character due to typecasting and the law of diminishing returns that followed the film’s success. He met dramatist Anthony Shaffer, who reportedly told him that Lee intended to produce films (through Cathode Ray Tube) “…without ladies who look like Barbra Windsor running up and down papier mâché halls screaming, without the contact lenses and the snappers.” After his Tony-winning stage play “Sleuth” was adapted into a film that garnered nods for Best Director for Joseph L. Mankiewicz and Best Actor accolades for Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine, Shaffer was riding high. And soon, Shaffer would obtain Lee’s dream role.
