Originally from Scotland, George Dario Marino Franchitti, MBE (born 19 May 1973) is a British former racing driver and current motorsport commentator. His list of accomplishments includes four IndyCar Series titles, three Indianapolis 500 victories, and one 24 Hours of Daytona victory. In the early 1990s, Franchitti began his career in Britain, where he raced in Formula Vauxhall and Formula Three and won the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award the same year. The AMG team hired Franchitti to race in touring cars in the DTM and its successor, the International Touring Car Championship, after he was unable to get a single-seater drive in 1995. After two very successful seasons, the show was cancelled at the end of the 1996 season, leaving Franchitti once again aimless. In 1997, Mercedes signed Franchitti to drive for Hogan Racing in CART.
After joining Team Green in 1998, Franchitti won 10 races throughout his six seasons in CART. However, he was never able to take home the series’ championship, finishing as high as second place in 1999, behind Juan Pablo Montoya on a tiebreaker. For the 2003 season, Franchitti stayed with Team Green despite the squad’s relocation to the IndyCar Series. After an injury derailed Franchitti’s rookie year in IndyCar, he finally started winning races the following year. In 2007, his breakthrough season, he won four races, including a shortened Indianapolis 500 due to weather, and ultimately tied for the championship with Scott Dixon in the season’s last race. Franchitti received the BBC Scotland Sports Personality of the Year award at the season’s conclusion.
