David John Matthews, a musician and actor, was born on January 9, 1967, in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was a self-taught musician who moved around the world with his family throughout his childhood. They moved to the New York suburb of Yorktown Heights when Matthews was two years old, where his father, a physicist, worked for IBM. Matthews’ father died of lung cancer in 1977, and the family relocated to Johannesburg to be with relatives.

Matthews moved back to the United States after high school to avoid South Africa’s compulsory military service, where he worked as a bartender at Miller’s, a jazz club in Charlottesville, Virginia. It was there that he first fantasised about forming his own band. In 1990, Matthews decided to record a demo tape with his favourite jazz musicians, saxophonist Leroi Moore and drummer Carter Beauford. He hired Stefan Lessard, a 16-year-old local prodigy, for bass. Boyd Tinsley, the band’s violinist, was hired only a few weeks after it was formed. Early local gigs were a smashing success, and the band quickly grew a devoted fan base. Coran Capshaw, the band’s manager, used grassroots marketing to propel the band to the national stage. The Dave Matthews Band was the name of the band.

The Dave Matthews Band soon found itself performing at frat houses and beach clubs across the country. People started making bootlegs of their shows, and word of the band quickly spread among the college crowd. Under the Table and Dreaming, the band’s major label debut, debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 in 1994. Crash, the band’s second album, was released two years later and debuted at No. 2. Though the album received less critical acclaim, the band’s follow-up concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden sold out in three hours.

The band released an official double-disc live album titled Live at Red Rocks in October 1997. It debuted at No. 3 despite no marketing or promotion, offering a high-quality and reasonably priced alternative to illegal live CDs that were beginning to flood the black market.

After a brief hiatus in 1997, the Dave Matthews Band returned to the studio in 1998 to record Before These Crowded Streets (1998), which debuted at No. 1. The band repeatedly postponed the release of their next album before announcing in 2000 that they would be scrapping it and parting ways with producer Steve Lillywhite.
