David Jason Muir, a journalist with the ABC broadcast-television network in New York City, was born on November 8, 1973. He is the host of ABC World News Tonight and co-anchor of ABC News magazine 20/20. Before Diane Sawyer took over on September 1, 2014, Muir was the weekend anchor and principal backup anchor on ABC’s World News Tonight. Muir has received several Edward R. Murrow and Emmy honours for his local, national, and international journalism at ABC News. David Muir was raised on Onondaga Hill and was born into a Catholic family in Syracuse, New York. In addition to six nieces and three nephews, Muir has two younger step-siblings and two younger siblings.
He grew up watching ABC News’ premier show with his family every night, and he considers veteran anchor Peter Jennings to be his greatest journalistic inspiration. He received his diploma from Onondaga Central Junior-Senior High School in May 1991 before enrolling in the nearby Ithaca College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism in May 1995. He worked as an intern at Syracuse’s WTVH-TV while in high school. A lecturer Muir had in college who complimented him on having “the cut of a TV newsman” inspired Muir. He studied abroad at the University of Salamanca in Spain for another semester via the Institute for the International Education of Students after spending a semester at the Institute on Political Journalism at the Fund for American Studies at Georgetown University.
