Belgian film director, screenwriter, and animator Frederik Du Chau was born on May 15, 1965. In his homeland of Ghent, Du Chau attended the Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied cinema and animation under Raoul Servais. After finishing college, he worked as an animator at Walt Disney Animation France, then as a freelancer, directing a number of live-action/animation hybrid commercials for local outlets. When his student film The Mystery of the Lamb (Het mysterie van het lam) was chosen to screen at the Los Angeles Animation Celebration Conference, he moved to Hollywood and worked as an animator, then a visual development and storyboard artist, for studios including Disney, Warner Bros., and Universal.
The short film that Du Chau co-directed with Hoyt Yeatman for Sony Wonder was Du Chau’s big break as a filmmaker. After that, he worked as a storyboard artist for Chuck Jones, where he got firsthand instruction in the finer points of comedy from the man himself.When Universal needed an animation director for The Land Before Time III: The Time of the Great Giving, they turned to Du Chau, who had previously sold two scripts and worked as a visual development artist at the studio. One of them had him attached as director, and shortly after, Warner Bros. gave him the chance to helm their first-ever animated picture, Quest for Camelot.
