American stock car racing driver and team owner Derrike Wayne Cope was born on November 3, 1958. His victory in the Daytona 500 in 1990 made him famous. The last time we saw him racing in the NASCAR Cup Series, he was teaming up with Rick Ware Racing to drive the No. 15 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for the team. Additionally, Cope managed the StarCom crew. As of the 2022 season, he is the last active driver to have started every race in every decade of the NASCAR Cup Series. Cope spent his childhood in the Washington town of Spanaway despite being born in San Diego. He was a big baseball and car racing fan in high school.

He caught for the baseball team at Bethel High School and went on to play for Whitman College. Cope’s career as a baseball player was cut short by a knee injury he sustained while being scouted by MLB teams. After that, he stopped everything else and focused on racing.
