Destanee Aiava is a professional tennis player for Australia. On September 11, 2017, she reached a career-high WTA singles ranking of 147, and in October 2019, she reached a doubles level of 192. Aiava has won a total of ten championships on the ITF Women’s Circuit, five in singles and five in doubles. After earning a wildcard for the 2017 Australian Open as a result of her victory at the 2016 U18 Australian Championships, she made her Grand Slam main-draw debut that year. By doing so, she made history as the first player, male or female, born in 2000 or later to compete in a Grand Slam tournament’s main draw. Wildcard entry Aiava fell in the opening round of the Brisbane International against Ajla Tomljanovi.

Again, Aiava was given a bye into the first round of the Australian Open thanks to a wildcard, but she was eliminated by eventual champion Simona Halep, who is ranked #1 in the world. During the opening set, Aiava had two set points before receiving a medical time-out. Thus, she went on to lose the match in straight sets. Aiava progressed to the semifinals of the Clay Court International after advancing to the quarterfinals of the Burnie International and Zhuhai Open. Osaka was the scene of Aiava’s third ITF championship and first outside of Australia, which she achieved in April.

When the new season kicked off, Aiava was first up in Brisbane International. After beating out Vania King, Mandy Minella, and Christina McHale, she advanced to the main draw. In the first round, she beat Kristina Mladenovic but ultimately lost to No. 2 seed Naomi Osaka. Aiava competed in the Australian Open as a wildcard for the third time, however, she was defeated by Madison Keys, the No. 17 seed. On March 24, she defeated Risa Ozaki, ranked 289th in the world, to win the Clay Court International tournament.
