Dominic Dobson, born in Germany on September 14, 1957, is a former driver in the Championship Auto Racing Team (CART) and the Craftsman Truck Series. He has made seven starts in the Indianapolis 500, with a best finish of 12th in 1992. In addition to the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Porsche 962 with Jean Alesi and Will Hoy, Dobson participated in a number of IMSA and other Sport car races, with his best finish being second at Daytona and Sebring in 1990 with Sarel van der Merwe and Klaus Ludwig. Dobson was born and raised in Seattle, where he still resides. He worked as a driving coach at the Bob Bondurant School, which was located at Sonoma’s Sears Point Raceway in the 1980s. He co-founded Zephyr Racing with fellow Bondurant trainer Ron Nelson in the 1980s.
In the early spring of 1985, Zephyr relocated its operations from San Rafael, California, to a brand new facility it had constructed near Sears Point Raceway. Zephyr had a fleet of formula and sports racing vehicles that it hired out, serviced, and supported at races. Renting a car for a single race or for the whole season was common practice. Customers of Zephyr participated in SCCA regional and national events, as well as those of the American City Racing League. In the late ’90s, he was a part of the Dodge Stratus factory squad that competed in the North American Touring Car Championship (NATC), which ran in conjunction with CART race weekends. In 1998, he made 10 appearances for Dodge in the Craftsman Truck Series, where he started as high as third and finished as low as seventeenth.
