Oscar-nominated filmmaker Dominique Deruddere, one of the most illustrious figures in Belgian cinema, has been interested in producing movies ever since he was a little boy. At the age of fourteen, Dominique made his first film, “Orange Licht,” with the help of his elder brother’s movie camera. He then graduated to 16mm (“Bedankt Ma”) and then 35 mm (“Wodka Orange”). Deruddere then worked with his boyhood buddy Marc Didden, co-writing the screenplay for “Brussels by Night” (1983) and playing a big role in “Istanbul,” after making these shorts before, during, and after his film school years (1985). In 1986, when he adapted a novella by Charles Bukowski, the young filmmaker made the correct call.

Indeed, a visionary producer saw potential in the thirty-minute short and decided to turn it into a full-length movie. In fact, “Crazy Love” (also known as “Love is a Dog from Hell”) was distributed everywhere, quickly became a festival favourite, and was universally praised as a success. Francis Ford Coppola saw the picture and helped Deruddere get his next project off the ground; a remake of “Bandini,” based on a novel by John Fante, shot in the United States in 1989 and released internationally. It was in 2001 when “Everyone Famous” director Dominique Deruddere returned to the United States to defend his picture, which had been nominated for an Oscar Award in the Best Foreign Film category. “Suite 16” isn’t Deruddere’s only film, however (1994).
