American film and television director, producer, and writer Donna Deitch (born June 8, 1945, San Francisco, California), is perhaps most well-known for her work on the 1985 film Desert Hearts. It was the first major Hollywood film to show a lesbian couple in a favourable light. Donna Deitch went from earning awards as a documentary filmmaker to producing and directing Desert Hearts, a smash success at the Sundance Film Festival in 1986, the Telluride Film Festival in 1985, and the Toronto International Film Festival the same year.
The Samuel Goldwyn Company decided to distribute the picture internationally. After Oprah Winfrey saw the film, she quickly engaged director Deitch to helm the four-hour miniseries The Ladies of Brewster Place, which was nominated for an Emmy. After Brewster Place, three of Deitch’s pilots were ordered to series; Second Noah was one of them. She has directed episodes for a wide variety of hourlong dramas, including as NYPD Blue, ER, Murder One, Law & Order: SVU, Easy Streets, The Visitor, Dragnet, Crossing Jordan, Heroes, and Private Practice. South of Nowhere, the first episode of The N’s, was directed by her.For HBO, she oversaw the production of Prison Stories: Women on the Inside, and for Showtime, she oversaw the production of The Devil’s Arithmetic, starring Kirsten Dunst and Brittany Murphy, as well as Common Ground, written by Terrence McNally, Paula Vogel, and Harvey Fierstein (also for Showtime).
