The Duke Blue Devils compete in the NCAA FBS Atlantic Coast Conference and play their home games at Cameron Indoor Stadium. However, Duke’s football program continued to deteriorate after 1994, with the team failing to post a winning season for the remainder of Goldsmith’s tenure. After that 1994 season, Goldsmith’s teams struggled, failing to win more than four games in a single season.

His Duke team went 0–11 in 1996. Goldsmith was fired as the Blue Devils’ head coach after the 1998 season, with a 17–39 overall record. Duke’s football win-loss record was 13–90 from 1999 to 2007; from 2000 to 2001, Duke went on a 22-game losing streak. Carl Franks, a former Florida assistant under former Duke head coach Steve Spurrier, was hired to replace Fred Goldsmith and turn the Duke football program around.

He was unable to do so. Franks was fired and replaced by Ted Roof, his defensive coordinator, after going 7–45 in four full seasons and part of a fifth. For the final five games of the 2003 season, Roof was named interim head coach. Roof’s interim tag was removed after the Blue Devils won two of their final three games of the season, and he was named the program’s 21st head football coach. Roof’s good fortunes did not last, as he struggled as Duke’s head coach, going a dismal 6–45 before being fired after four seasons and the partial fifth he completed for Franks.

Roof’s tenure did have one positive aspect in that Duke defenses consistently ranked in the top 30 in tackles for loss for the first time in years. The roof went on to win a national championship as Auburn’s defensive coordinator under Gene Chizik in 2010. In late 2007, Tennessee offensive coordinator and former Ole Miss head coach David Cutcliffe was hired as Duke’s 22nd head football coach to lead the Blue Devils football program. Cutcliffe had a reputation as a brilliant offensive mind and quarterbacks coach, having worked with both Peyton and Eli Manning. In 2008, a judge ruled in favor of Duke after they backed out of a four-game contract with the University of Louisville; the judge stated that it was up to Louisville to find a suitable replacement, as Duke’s lawyers had persuasively argued that any Division I team would be equivalent or better, as he wrote in the ruling.

Duke finished 4–8 in 2008 and 5–7 in 2009, the closest the school had come to bowl eligibility since 1994. Cutcliffe’s Duke teams went 3-9 in back-to-back seasons in 2010 and 2011. Despite low preseason expectations, Duke’s 2012 team became bowl eligible for the first time since 1994 after defeating rival North Carolina 33–30. Wallace Wade shocked the college football world when he left Alabama for Duke, later justifying the move by saying that Duke shared his belief that a school should provide its athletes with a strong academic background. Wade’s success at Alabama (three national titles) transferred well to Duke’s program.

During Wade’s 16-year tenure as coach, the team won seven Southern Conference championships. He also led the team to two Rose Bowl victories. Wade’s accomplishments earned him a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame. Lawrence Jackson is among those. Additionally, OL Winston Justice performed well enough to forego his senior year and pursue a professional career.

However, USC’s hopes of winning another national championship were dashed by the Texas Longhorns in a dramatic 41-38 loss at the 2006 Rose Bowl. Following the loss of offensive stalwarts Leinart, Bush, and White, defensive leader Bing, and offensive linemen Matua, Justice, and Lutui, USC was forced to rebuild for the 2006 football season. The Trojans’ offense was built around unproven quarterback John David Booty, returning star receivers.

Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith, and second-year wide receiver Patrick Turner. Mark Sanchez, a highly touted recruit from the class of 2005 (Mission Viejo High School, CA), was widely viewed as a dark horse to dethrone Booty as the starting quarterback, despite the fact that Booty was named the starter at the end of fall training camp. The starting tailback position was initially contested by returning players Chauncey Washington and Desmond Reed (both of whom were recovering from injuries) and heralded RB recruits, Stafon Johnson.

In their first Rose Bowl appearance, where they were defeated 7-3 by Southern California on a touchdown pass from a second-string quarterback to a third-string tight end in the final minute of the game. Duke would be invited to return to Pasadena for the 1942 Rose Bowl, this time to face Oregon State. Because of concerns about further Japanese west coast attacks in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, the game was relocated to Durham.

Due to the fact that Duke’s stadium was significantly smaller than the regular venue, bleachers from North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina were borrowed, increasing capacity from 35,000 to 55,000. Despite being 3-to-1 favorites, the Iron Dukes would lose 20-16. Under coach Bill Murray, the football program was also successful in the 1950s and 1960s, winning six of the first ten ACC football championships from 1953 to 1962.

From 1943 to 1957, the Blue Devils were ranked in the Associated Press poll at some point during the season. When Steve Spurrier coached the team in the late 1980s, the football program also had a string of successful years. In 1989, Spurrier led the Blue Devils to a share of the ACC championship.

The 1989 ACC Championship was the last title won by a North Carolina school until Wake Forest won their second ACC Championship in 2006. In 1994, the team rose to prominence for the first time under coach Fred Goldsmith. The team started the season 8-1 and was ranked as high as in the country before losing the final two games of the season, 24-23 to North Carolina State and 41-40 to archrival North Carolina.

The 1994 team lost 34-21 to Wisconsin in the Hall Of Fame Bowl, now known as the Outback Bowl, in the program’s first New Year’s Day Bowl game since 1962. However, after 1994, Dukeallace Wade Stadium in Durham, North Carolina. The football program has 17 conference championships (7 ACC championships and 10 Southern Conference titles), 53 All-Americans, 10 ACC Players of the Year (the most in the ACC), and three Pro Football Hall of Famers (second only to Miami’s four).

David Cutcliffe is the current coach of the Blue Devils. Although Duke has mostly struggled since the mid-1960s, Cutcliffe is leading the Blue Devils to a renaissance in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, losing by only four points after jumping out to a 38–17 lead at halftime. In 2014, Duke had a 9-win season, including a victory over eventual Orange Bowl winner Georgia Tech and a close Sun Bowl loss to 15th-ranked Arizona State.

In the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium in 2015, the Blue Devils defeated Indiana 44-41 in overtime. ew offensive coordinator Norm Chow, In fact, Palmer’s performance, particularly in the season-ending rivalry games against Notre Dame and UCLA, impressed so many pundits that he went on to win the Heisman Trophy, carrying every region of voting and becoming the first USC quarterback to do so.

Despite tying for the Pacific-10 Conference title (with Washington State), having the highest BCS “strength of schedule” rating, and fielding the nation’s top defense led by safety Troy Polamalu, USC finished the season ranked fifth in the BCS rankings. In the Orange Bowl, USC defeated BCS No. 3 Iowa 38-17.

In 2003, Palmer was replaced at quarterback by Matt Leinart, a highly touted but unproven redshirt sophomore. Despite his first touchdown pass in a win over Auburn, the Trojans suffered an early-season triple-overtime loss to conference rival California in Berkeley. Nonetheless, Carroll led the team to victories in their final four games, and they finished the regular season 11-1. Prior to the postseason, both the coaches poll and the AP Poll ranked USC first, but the BCS – which also took into account computer rankings – ranked Oklahoma

In the 2003 BCS National Championship Game, The Sugar Bowl, BCS #2 LSU defeated BCS #1 Oklahoma 21-14. Meanwhile, BCS #3 USC defeated BCS #4 Michigan 28-14 in the Rose Bowl. USC finished the season ranked first in the AP poll and was awarded the AP National Championship; however, LSU won the BCS National Championship that year, resulting in a split national championship between LSU and USC. Following the controversy, corporate sponsors emerged who were willing to organize an LSU-USC game to settle the matter; however, the NCAA refused to allow the matchup. Carson Palmer won the Heisman Trophy.

The Associated Press ranked USC first in the preseason in 2004, owing to the return of Leinart and sophomore running backs LenDale White and Reggie Bush. The defense, led by All-American defensive tackles Shaun Cody and Mike Patterson, as well as All-American linebackers Lofa Tatupu and Matt Grootegoed, was regarded as one of the best in the country.

The offensive line, which had few returning starters, and the receiving corps, which had lost last year’s senior Keary Colbert and the breakout star of 2003, Mike Williams, were key questions. During the Maurice Clarett trial, Williams attempted to enter the NFL draught a year early, but was turned down by the NFL and then denied eligibility by the NCAA. Despite close calls against Stanford and California, the Trojans finished the season undefeated and on their way to the 2004 BCS Championship game at the Orange Bowl.

USC is only the second team in NCAA football history to have gone wire-to-wire (ranked first from preseason to postseason since the AP began publishing preseason rankings); the first was Florida State in 1999.  in the Orange Bowl, were undefeated and captained by sixth-year quarterback Jason White, who had won the Heisman in 2003; the game marked the firstMost analysts predicted a close game as USC matched its speed and defense against Oklahoma’s running game and skilled offensive line, but the reality was quite different. USC led by 38 points at halftime and won by a score of 55-19.

Despite both Auburn and Utah finishing their seasons and postseasons undefeated, USC won the BCS and AP national championships. Matt Leinart’s Heisman Trophy The Notre Dame/USC rivalry was resurrected in the 2005 regular season on a last-second play when Senior Quarterback Matt Leinart scored the winning touchdown with the help of a controversial push from behind by running back Reggie Bush, dubbed the “Bush Push.

The season culminated with USC defeating cross-town rival UCLA 66-19 and running back Reggie Bush winning the Heisman Trophy. Matt Leinart finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting. Several other players were named All-Americans as well .
