Ed Ames, or Eddie Ames, is an American singer and actor who was born Edmund Dantes Urick on July 9, 1927. His mainstream songs in the mid-to-late 1960s were “My Cup Runneth Over,” “Who Will Answer,” and “When the Snow Is on the Roses,” and he is best remembered for his role as Mingo on the TV series Daniel Boone. Along with his brothers, he formed the successful singing group the Ames Brothers in the ’50s. Sarah (Zaslavskaya) and David (called Eurich) Urick (from Ukraine) were Ames’s parents; they were Jewish and settled in Malden, Massachusetts, United States. In a family of nine, he was the last of five boys and four girls.

Ames was from a low-income family. He studied at Boston Latin School, where he learned about literature and music from the classical and opera repertoires. When the four brothers were in high school, they created a quartet that quickly became a regional favorite in the Boston area. Art Mooney, a bandleader in New York City, recruited three of the brothers when they created the Amory Brothers quartet.
