Ed Berrier got into go-kart racing and quickly rose to prominence, eventually winning 72 of 127 races he participated in. Having started his own squad in 1980, he shifted to NASCAR’s Dash Series. After waiting for another four years, he finally made his debut in the Busch Series, where he ran 18 races and placed in the top ten three times. It was not until 1987, when he had four top-five finishes, that he again finished so well. Over the course of the following years, Berrier ran reduced schedules and still managed to amass 22 top-ten finishes. In his first Winston Cup race, the 1995 Mountain Dew Southern 500, he finished twenty-first.

Berrier made one NASCAR start in 1996, and he finished 39th at Darlington Raceway. In 1997, Berrier raced in select Cup events for Sadler Brothers Racing before being recruited by PRW Racing to pilot the No. 77 UAW/Lear-sponsored Ford in the Busch Series. After a brief stint in which he finished in the top 20 three times, Berrier came back to the squad in 1998 with veteran Cup competitor Jimmy Means at the helm. The year’s high point occurred at the 300th and last Galaxy Food Centers. Starting on the outside pole, Berrier went on to lead 187 laps route to his only NASCAR Cup Series win. Berrier and his crew were ranked seventeenth that season despite having a DNQ at Rockingham Speedway. In 1999, Berrier’s success did not continue, and he was eventually let go after being able to qualify for just 17 races.

Berrier got back on his feet quickly by late 1999, when he began working a reduced schedule for Junie Donlavey. For the Cup series, Berrier competed in 19 events, with a best finish of 20th at the 1995 Darlington race. At Kansas Speedway, he participated in the first-ever Busch Series race, but he wrecked on lap 10. In 2003, Berrier competed in the first race of the Craftsman Truck Series for Kevin Harvick Incorporated, and he finished 13th.
