Elizabeth Warren Bio
Elizabeth Warren, née Elizabeth Herring (born June 22, 1949 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, United States), is a legal scholar and politician from Massachusetts. She was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat in 2012 and began serving in that body the following year.
Herring was raised in Norman, Oklahoma, where her father worked primarily as a maintenance man and her mother worked in catalogue sales. Warren began waiting tables at the age of 13 when her father suffered a heart attack. She got a debate scholarship at the age of 16 and attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C., despite the fact that she graduated from the University of Houston (B.S. in speech pathology, 1970).
She married Jim Warren, a mathematician, at the age of 19, and relocated to Texas; they had two children but separated in 1978. After working as a special education teacher, she got a law degree from Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey in 1976, practised law out of her living room, and then began a career as a law-school professor that eventually led her to Harvard University. Along the way, she developed a reputation as an expert in bankruptcy law. Warren married Harvard law professor Bruce Mann in 1980.
Warren testified before congressional committees on financial issues impacting Americans, a subject she covered in a number of books, including The Fragile Middle Class: Americans in Debt (2000) and The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Mothers and Fathers Are Going Broke (2007). (2003). Warren rose to public prominence as chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), the agency established by the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act to bailout collapsing American financial institutions in 2008. She then advocated for the establishment of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which was formed by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010.
Warren established and staffed the bureau tasked with protecting people from financial fraud and chicanery as interim director, but she was not chosen as the bureau’s permanent head by US President Barack Obama, who, according to some, feared Republican opposition. Nonetheless, Warren had established herself as a populist idol and a liberal icon, both of which were lauded by talk-show hosts Jon Stewart and Bill Maher, on whose shows she appeared.
In 2011, Warren announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate seat previously held by Ted Kennedy. At the party’s state convention, she received over 96 percent of the vote, avoiding a primary election. Warren campaigned, like her Republican opponent, incumbent Scott Brown, who had won the special election to replace Kennedy, as a protector of the downtrodden middle class.
She debunked charges of Harvard elitism with her down-to-earth demeanour and argued for the virtues of good government, countering Brown’s championing of rugged individualism with her assertion that every entrepreneur profited from public works and well-educated public school staff. After being accused of misrepresenting herself as having partial Native American ancestry (which she could not substantiate), Warren said that her identification as Cherokee and Delaware originated from family stories. Warren beat Brown in November 2012, and upon assuming office in January 2013, she became the first woman to represent Massachusetts in the United States Senate.
Warren published a memoir, A Fighting Chance, in 2014, in which she detailed formative years of her youth as well as her experiences in government. Warren took a leadership role in aggressively challenging and opposing a number of the cabinet choices of the election victor, Republican U.S. President Donald Trump, most notably eventual secretary of education Betsy DeVos and attorney general Jeff Sessions.
In February 2017, Warren was reading a letter to the Senate from civil rights activist Coretta Scott King opposing Sessions’ nomination to a federal court judgeship in 1986 when she was silenced and formally reprimanded for violating a rarely-used rule prohibiting senators from impugning the conduct or motives of other senators. Warren concluded his reading of the letter on Facebook in a video upload that garnered millions of views. Later that year, she wrote This Fight Is Our Fight: America’s Middle Class: The Battle to Save It.
