Northern Irish loyalist activist Ernest “Ernie” Elliott 6 December 1972, better known by his alias “Duke,” was a prominent figure in the formation of the Ulster Defense Association (UDA). Unlike the conservative UDA, Elliott praised communism and socialism and was fond of quoting Che Guevara and Karl Marx. As a result of a drunken brawl, Elliott was slain by a fellow UDA member, but republicans and a rival party within the UDA both claimed responsibility for his death. Elliott, a native of Leopold Street, a neighborhood of Belfast near to the Shankill Road. was active in the early 1971 establishment of the Woodvale Defence Association (WDA), a vigilante group. A close drinking companion of his, WDA deputy leader Davy Fogel, designated him as lieutenant. Elliott, a short but stocky man, had a reputation as a “hard man” on the Shankill and was no stranger to using force to settle disputes. While Charles Harding Smith was arrested in London on gun-running charges in 1972, he became commander of the WDA.

After meeting with members of the Official IRA in Crumlin Road Gaol, Gusty Spence, leader of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), started to think that loyalism should adopt a more left-wing stance. Although many in the UVF opposed Spence’s ideals, several of his fellow inmates took them to heart. Elliott was fascinated by the beliefs of these Shankill UVF soldiers after he heard them discussed with friends of his from the group. Elliott quickly became enamored with Marxism and sought ways to apply its ideas to the “loyalist fight.”
