Gorillaz Bio

Damon Albarn started Gorillaz on a whim, as a way for the singer/songwriter to experiment with music that his Brit-pop band Blur couldn’t compose on their own. In spite of this, the “virtual band” he developed with artist Jamie Hewlett in the last years of the twentieth century has evolved into his primary performing vehicle in the twenty-first century. Gorillaz’s self-titled first album was an international success right out of the gate in 2001, thanks in part to the gloomy, slinky smash single “Clint Eastwood,” which served as the album’s centerpiece.

Feel Good Inc.’s brighter counterpart, “Feel Good Inc.,” was an even bigger hit in 2005, and the album that gave birth to it, Demon Days, revealed how Albarn used Gorillaz as a way to incorporate non-rock music while also addressing larger political and societal concerns. This was taken even further with the 2010s environmentally conscious Plastic Beach. Hewlett’s cartoon avatars provided Gorillaz a tinge of levity, and that levity, when combined with Albarn’s shifting roster of collaborators, helped to soften the band’s darker moments in the early years.

The band’s musical constant throughout their existence has been Albarn, who has driven the group ahead while also stretching the bounds of his own comfort zone to greater heights. Over the years, the group has collaborated with artists such as Del the Funky Homosapien, De La Soul, Shay Ryder, Mick Jones of the Clash, Lou Reed, James Murphy, André 3000, George Benson, and Elton John.

The initial lineup of Gorillaz combined the musical abilities of Albarn, Dan “The Automator” Nakamura, Cibo Matto’s Miho Hatori, and Tom Tom Club’s Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz with the captivating graphics of Jamie Hewlett, who is best known as the author of the cult comic Tank Girl. The band went on to become one of the most successful alternative rock bands in history.

Kid Koala and Del the Funky Homosapien, both of whom worked with Nakamura on the Deltron 3030 project, completed the creative team behind the Gorillaz quartet, which included virtual members 2-D, a cute but spacy singer/keyboardist; Murdoc, a spooky, possibly Satanic bassist and the brains behind the group; Russel, a drummer who is both inspired by “Farrakhan and Chaka Khan” and possessed by “funk The group’s website included Hewlett’s photographs as well as the group’s music in a way that was both visually and acoustically appealing.

After releasing the Tomorrow Comes Today EP in late 2000, Gorillaz went on to release a successful single featuring Clint Eastwood, which became worldwide hit the following year, and was titled “Clint Eastwood.”The band’s self-titled debut full-length album was released in the spring of 2001. Gorillaz was a huge worldwide success, reaching platinum-level sales in the United States and selling more than seven million copies in total around the world.

When the group’s Svengalis saw an opportunity, they pounced, releasing the G-Sides compilation in 2002, as well as a Phase One: Celebrity Takedown DVD and the dub-inspired remix CD Laika Come Home the following year. The project was put on hold immediately, however, when Albarn began working on Blur’s seventh studio album, Think Tank, which was released in 2003.

The Grey Album is a collection of songs that are primarily grey in color, as the name suggests. Once Albarn decided he was ready to begin work on the next Gorillaz album, he enlisted the assistance of Danger Mouse (the DJ responsible for The Grey Album, a mash-up of the Beatles’ White Album and Jay-Black Z’s Album) and a long list of other collaborators, including De La Soul, Shakira, Debbie Harry, Dennis Hopper, and Martina Topley-Bird, among others.

On the other hand, while Del the Funky Homosapien and Nakamura were conspicuously absent from Demon Days (another Top Ten hit), 2-D was present and accounted for on Demon Days (another Top Ten hit), which was released in April 2005. A number of Grammy nominations were given to the album, indicating that it had received both critical and commercial approval. In the United States, the album was certified double platinum, and in the United Kingdom, it enjoyed even greater success.

Gorillaz began working on a new album in 2007, but the project didn’t see the light of day until Plastic Beach, the group’s third studio album, was released in 2010. In advance of its tour, Plastic Beach earned overwhelmingly positive reviews, which drew added attention as a result of the fact that former Clash members Paul Simonon and Mick Jones were both members of Gorillaz at the time.

The Fall, a new Gorillaz album, was recorded on Albarn’s iPad while the band was on tour, and it was released in 2012 as a result of the tour. After being made accessible to fan club members digitally on Christmas Day 2010, the album was formally released to the general public in the spring of 2011.

The album was first made available to fan club members on Christmas Day 2010. When compared to Gorillaz’s previous albums, which featured collaborations with a varied spectrum of musicians, The Fall had only four guest collaborations, with three of those performers having previously appeared on Gorillaz tracks (Bobby Womack, Mick Jones, and Paul Simonon).

From 2001 to 2011, a compilation of single tracks was released. Aside from the release of the best-of compilation The Singles Collection 2001–2011, which was published in November 2011, the Gorillaz have remained rather silent during the past five years. During this time period, there have been rumors of a probable falling out between Albarn and Hewlett. In early 2015, however, Hewlett unveiled updated illustrations of the virtual members on the company’s website, putting an end to those rumors once and for all. Soon after, Albarn revealed that a new album was really in the works and that it will be released in the fall of that year.

Following a year of anticipation, the politically charged “Hallelujah Money” (co-written with English musician and poet Benjamin Clementine) was released as the first single in support of the album in January of the following year. It was in April of that year that the full-length effort, titled Humanz, was made available. Vince Staples, Popcaan, Mavis Staples, Grace Jones, Jehnny Beth (Savages), and Noel Gallagher, who was once Albarn’s arch-rival in the music industry, were among others who made cameo appearances.

Humanz’s B-side “Garage Palace,” which featured rapper Little Simz, was released a few months after the original track. As for Humanz, the band embarked on a big world tour, their second in as many years and their first since 2010, during which they began work on a new album, which was finally released in November. The Now Now, Gorillaz’s sixth studio album, was released in June 2018 with fewer contributors than the band’s previous albums.

When it was released, the album debuted at number five on the UK Albums Chart and at number four on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States. The band is now working on a conceptual project titled Song Machine, which will see the release of singles and music videos in the first quarter of 2020, among other things. Gorillaz compiled these recordings — which included contributions from artists such as Robert Smith, Beck, Schoolboy Q, St. Vincent, Elton John, and many others — for the official release Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez, which will be available in October 2020.

Gorillaz is currently working on the second season of Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez, which will be released in October 2020. Album sales in the United Kingdom were strong, with the album debuting at number two (it was the band’s ninth Top Three effort) and at number twelve in the United States.
