Judge Greg Mathis was born on April 5, 1960, in Detroit, Michigan, and is the state’s youngest ever elected judge. Mathis’s difficult childhood and time spent in the Errol Flynns gang are detailed in his autobiography, Inner City Miracle, published in 2002. Mathis was raised by his mother. While on juvenile probation in 1977, Mathis completed his education by attending Herman Gardens Elementary School, Peterson Seventh Day Adventist School, and Wayne Memorial High School, where he eventually received his GED via Operation PUSH. In 1982, Mathis graduated with a Bachelor of Science in public administration from Eastern Michigan University, and in 1987, he earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Law School. Mathis spearheaded the voter registration and Free South Africa movements on the Eastern Michigan University campus.
After graduating from college in 1983, Mathis worked on Reverend Jesse Jackson’s presidential campaign in 1984 and volunteered for Operation Push. Mathis, his wife Linda, and a group of friends established four Detroit area preschools in 1986 under the name Young Adults Asserting Themselves (YAAT). Mathis was the manager of Detroit’s Neighborhood City Halls under the late Mayor Coleman A. Young after serving as the state director of Reverend Jackson’s 1988 presidential campaign. After being elected to the 36th District Court of Michigan in 1995, Mathis had his own show on Warner Brothers Television beginning in 1998.
Mathis has been featured extensively in both traditional and new media and has won several prizes and accolades. Mathis and his college love and wife, Linda, have raised four children and he is the chairman of the board of Rainbow/PUSH-Excel and a member of the NAACP and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
