More than 150 Grands Prix were attempted, three of which he won. His greatest success came in Formula One. On May 18, 1967, in the city of Mönchengladbach (North Rhine-Westphalia), West Germany, Frentzen was born to German businessman Heinrich-Harald Frentzen (1933-2012) and his Spanish wife, Angela Lladosa (1937–2020). After his father bought him his first kart when he was twelve, Frentzen got off to a remarkable start in the sport.

In 1981, while he was only fourteen years old, Frentzen won the German Junior Kart Championship. Frentzen entered the CIK Asia Pacific Championships in Australia with a Dino, but he did not place. This was two years later. He was the 1984 100cc class runner-up. His father, a mortician, not only provided financial and emotional support but also managed and repaired the team’s vehicles. Frentzen began his career in auto racing in 1985, when he competed in the German Formula Ford 2000 championship. Two years and many races later in Formula Ford, he finished second in the 1987 championship. After impressing veteran Formula One driver Jochen Mass in Formula Ford, Frentzen moved up to the German Formula Opel Lotus in 1988 with the Junior Team of Jochen Mass. On his rookie season, Frentzen won the German series, and teammate Marco Werner placed third. In addition, he raced in the Formula Opel Lotus Euroseries, where he earned 56 points and a sixth-place finish.
