The Houston Colt.45s were the Astros’ original name, and they joined the New York Mets as expansion teams in the National League in 1962. Three years later, when they moved into the Astrodome, the first domed sports arena and the dubbed “Eighth Wonder of the World,” the present moniker was chosen to honour Houston’s status as the Johnson Space Center’s home city. In 2000, the Astros relocated to Minute Maid Park, a new venue.  From 1969 to 1993, the Astros belonged to the NL West division. From 1994 to 2012, they belonged to the NL Central division. In 2013, they were transferred to the AL West division as part of an MLB restructuring.

The Astros had their first winning season in 1972, their first appearance in the playoffs in 1980, and three division championships throughout the 1980s. The Astros gained significant prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s thanks to the Killer B’s, a group of notable hitters that included the only Astros in the Hall of Fame, Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell. They won four additional division titles and made two appearances in the Wild Card round before making their first World Series appearance in 2005, where the Chicago White Sox of the American League swept them. After experiencing a severe downturn over the next ten years, businessman Jim Crane paid $680 million to acquire the franchise in 2011. When the Astros moved to the American League under Crane’s ownership, they adopted sabermetrics and helped develop new analytical techniques.

By the middle of the 2010s, the Astros had gone from being a struggling organisation to one of MLB’s most successful and powerful teams. Since then, the Astros have participated in a record six straight American League Championship Series, won four of the past six American League pennants, and amassed over 100 victories in four separate seasons. The Astros competed during this time and defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2017 World Series to win their first championship. They later competed against the Washington Nationals in 2019, the Atlanta Braves in 2021, and the Philadelphia Phillies in 2022, winning their second championship in the latter series. They are the only club to have triumphed in a playoff series six times in a row. After the Mets, they became the second expansion club to win five league pennants after winning their fifth in 2022. They are also the sixth expansion team to have won two World Championships.
