Born on July 3, 1956, race car driver James Horton III presently competes in major races in the Northeast in a dirt modified for the Halmar Racing Team. Over the course of eight years, he competed in 48 NASCAR Winston Cup events. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was a fixture on the ARCA racing circuit. Horton has dominated the Northeastern United States’ dirt track modified scene, winning a number of major events. Horton originally gained notoriety in the Northeastern United States as a driver for customized racecars. In the early 1970s, he got his start in auto racing behind the wheel of a small block powered sportsman vehicle owned by his father. In 1974, he triumphed as Orange County Speedway’s sportsman champion.
He has a long list of track titles under his belt, including several in the modified and sportsman classes. His father’s No. 43 Modified was the winning car in the 1976 Orange County race, and he repeated the feat in 2017 with the Halmar Racing No. 43. In the modified feature that year, he and future NASCAR competitor Tighe Scott were engaged in one of the very unusual dead heats. The first of a double 50-lap feature was a nail-biter. After the race, Scott and Horton’s automobiles got into a wreck. A new career in the No. 3 Statewide dirt modified began for him after 1976. In 1975, 1977, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1997, 1998, 2003, and 2014, he was crowned champion of Bridgeport Speedway. Horton dominated on the 5/8 mile track in Bridgeport, winning a total of three times. He has won the Super DIRT Week 200, the most prestigious event in dirt modified racing, twice. One of his latter victories was in the Eastern States 200. In 2004 and 2006, he earned the title of modified track champion at New Egypt Speedway. As of the year 2022, he is still competing in races on a weekly basis.
