Filmmaker and writer John Duigan was born in Australia on June 19, 1949. Two of his films, The Year My Voice Broke and Flirting, are autobiographical, and he also directed the 1994 picture Sirens, starring Hugh Grant. With an Australian father, Duigan moved to Australia in 1961 after being born in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire, England. His sister, the author Virginia Duigan (who is married to filmmaker Bruce Beresford), is his sister-in-law, and his nephew, the actor Trilby Beresford, is his cousin.
After completing his studies at Ormond College at the University of Melbourne in 1973, Duigan went on to get a master’s degree in Philosophy. While in college, he was active as an actor, director, and performer in many films (including Brake Fluid, Bonjour Balwyn and Dalmas). He started making films in 1974, and his early triumphs included the AFI Award for Best Director for Mouth to Mouth and the Australian Writers’ Guild Award for Best Screenplay for Winter of our Dreams. His film Winter of Our Dreams premiered at the 13th Moscow International Film Festival and won many awards.One of Nicole Kidman’s first notable appearances was in the 1987 mini-series Vietnam, which went on to win several awards. After gaining experience in the United States and Europe, Australian filmmaker Mark Duigan returned home to produce Sirens, which went on to win the Best Feature award at the St. Petersburg Film Festival.
