John Neely Kennedy Bio
John Kennedy, full name John Neely Kennedy (born November 21, 1951 in Centreville, Mississippi, United States), is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican in 2016 and took office as Louisiana’s senator the following year. He previously served as state treasurer from 2000 to 2017.
Kennedy was born in Centreville, Mississippi, but grew up in adjacent Zachary, Louisiana, a small town located around 15 miles (25 kilometres) north of Baton Rouge. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1973 from Vanderbilt University, where he studied philosophy, economics, and political science and served as president of his senior class.
After graduating from high school in 1973, he studied law at the University of Virginia, earning a jurisdoctorate (1977), and at the University of Oxford, earning a bachelor’s degree in civil law (1979). He later returned to Louisiana and started private practise, eventually becoming a partner in the Chaffe McCall legal firm.
In 1990, Kennedy was appointed secretary to the cabinet of Republican Governor Buddy Roemer of Louisiana, for whom he had previously served as special legal counsel. In 1996, Roemer appointed him secretary of the Louisiana Department of Revenue. Kennedy was elected state treasurer three years later and took office in 2000. He and his wife, Becky, became founding members of North Cross United Methodist Church in Madisonville during this time. He unsuccessfully ran for the United States Senate as a Democrat in 2004, losing to Representative David Vitter.
Three years later, Kennedy switched to the Republican party but was defeated once more in 2008. He launched a third bid in 2016, this time to succeed Vitter, who was retiring. Kennedy ran on a fiscal conservatism platform and stressed his outsider status in Washington. Additionally, he was a vocal backer of eventual Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. In the November general election, Kennedy finished first with around 25% of the vote in a field of 24 candidates, necessitating a runoff. In December, he handily won his second election.
The University of Virginia is a public, coeducational institution of higher learning located in Charlottesville, Virginia, United States, on a 1,000-acre (405-hectare) campus amid the Blue Ridge Mountains’ foothills. It was chartered in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson received assistance from Joseph C. Cabell (1778–1856), a Virginia senator and the school’s principal fund-raiser. Jefferson was elected as the school’s first rector of the board of visitors (the governing body). Other presidents of the United States who served on the university’s board of trustees included James Madison and James Monroe.
Jefferson set out the campus of his “intellectual town,” constructed the buildings, oversaw the construction of the Rotunda (which he modelled after Rome’s Pantheon), developed the curriculum, and recruited staff. The school established in 1825 with an eight-member faculty.
Jefferson established an elective method of study and criticised degree conferrals as “artificial decorations.” By the American Civil War, the university’s faculty and student body were second only to Harvard’s. It was primarily a graduate institution until 1868, when the bachelor of science degree was introduced; in 1899, the bachelor’s degree became the primary offering. (The university granted a master of arts degree in 1831, the principal degree in the nineteenth century; the M.D. degree was awarded for the first time in 1828, and a law degree in 1842.)
