Junior Johnson, Robert Glenn Johnson, Jr. June 28, 1931, and December 20, 2019, was an American stock-car driver and one of the most important people in NASCAR history. He was born in Wilkes county, North Carolina, and died in Charlotte. Johnson, one of NASCAR’s most memorable figures, was instrumental in retracing the sport’s roots in the illicit booze trade. He was a successful team owner whose drivers won championships despite his own lack of success as a racer. He also pioneered new techniques to improve racing, including the practice of “drafting,” which is named after him.

Growing up, Johnson was exposed to both the world of racing and the illicit booze running world, since his father was a bootlegger who spent almost a third of his life in jail.
