Kobayashi was born in Amagasaki, near Kobe. His father runs a sushi business that the family owns. When he was nine years old, he started his career in the world of racing in the year 1996. In his debut season of karting, he competed in the SL Takarazuka Tournament Cadet Class and finished in third place. Kobayashi won a total of four karting championships over the course of the following seven years, including the Toyota SL All Japan Tournament Cadet Class series not once but twice. In 2004, he enrolled in Toyota’s Driver Academy and shortly afterwards began his professional career in open-wheel racing. His next endeavor was in Formula Renault, where he competed in the Asian, German, Italian, and Dutch championships. In the Italian championship, he won two races, making him the overall champion. Kobayashi continued his career in the Formula Renault class, competing in the Italian and European championships, and ultimately emerged victorious in both competitions after tallying six victories across the board.
