Karl Wendlinger is an ex-Formula One driver from Austria. He raced in F1 from 1991 until 1995. During the first Free Practice session of the 1994 Monaco Grand Prix, Wendlinger slammed the wall at over 280 km/h. Wendlinger’s F1 career was in jeopardy as he lay in a stupor for weeks. The crash forced the Sauber-Mercedes team to pull out of the competition. Due to poor results, French driver Jean-Christophe Boullion replaced Wendlinger for rounds 4-15 of the 1995 season. His last competition was in Down Under.
Again racing in the FIA GT Championship, Wendlinger has been a member of the JetAlliance Racing squad since 2006. In 2006, Phillip Peter was his colleague, and in 2007, Ryan Sharp, a Scottish race car driver, joined the squad. In 2007, Wendlinger raced in the 24 Hours of Daytona for the Sigal Sport team in a Riley DP powered by BMW. On the last night of his second tour, he went out and fell on his lap, sending him to the hospital. Due to the extensive damage, the vehicle had to be retired. In 2008, Wendlinger joined Ryan Sharp in racing for JetAlliance Racing. At the Silverstone leg of the RAC Tourist Trophy, they got off to a strong start. GT1 class and race winners Wendlinger and Sharp bested Maserati MC12 drivers Michael Bartels and Andrea Bertolini.
