In 1980, while Harvick was graduating from kindergarten, he got a go-kart as a gift. Harvick won seven national titles and two grand national titles in his 10 years of go-kart racing. It was at this period that Kevin Harvick developed the fiery resolve that has come to characterize him. He learned the importance of devotion and experienced the thrill of victory. After leaving the go-kart circuit, Harvick raced in the local Late Model Series for a few years before moving on to NASCAR’s Featherlite Southwest Series in 1992. When Harvick was still in high school, he raced on a reduced schedule for two years, but by 1995, he was back to racing full-time and had already won the Rookie of the Year award.

Instead of attending university to study architecture, Harvick opted to pursue a career in auto racing, and he has now moved up to the Winston West Series. In the next season, 1998, Harvick won five races and the Winston West Series title. Harvick’s short time in the Camping World Truck Series led to a meeting with legendary car owner Richard Childress. After seeing Harvick’s aggressive driving style, Childress offered him a spot in the Nationwide Series. To his credit, Harvick did take advantage of the opportunity.

Kevin Harvick, a rookie at the time, pushed the ACDelco Monte Carlo out of the garage at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February of 2000. The first year of a historic run in the Nationwide Series has started. On his route to Rookie of the Year honors, Harvick won three races and was third in points. In spite of his reputation as a fierce race car driver, he was known as “Happy” for his kind demeanor and constant grin off the track.

In 2001, Harvick was widely considered the best bet to win the Nationwide Series championship and ended the year as a major force in the Sprint Cup Series. Richard Childress, the car’s owner, requested Harvick to replace Dale Earnhardt as the driver of the GM Goodwrench Service Plus Monte Carlo on the Sprint Cup circuit after Earnhardt was involved in an accident on the penultimate lap of the Daytona 500. Harvick accepted and started the greatest year of his life despite the grueling schedule and hardship of racing full-time in two series.
