In his role as anchor of NBC Nightly News since 2015, American broadcast journalist Lester Holt. He is the first African-American to lead a network evening newscast on weekdays. In 1979, Holt, whose parents were African American and Jamaican, left California State University to work at a San Francisco radio station. The next year, he began his 19-year run with CBS, first as a correspondent for WCBS-TV in New York City. After a year, he moved on to a reporting and anchoring position at KNXT in Los Angeles, a CBS affiliate. But in 1983, he came back to WCBS-TV to continue his reporting and take on the role of the anchor as well. Beginning in 1986, Holt served as the nightly anchor for Chicago’s CBS affiliate, WBBM-TV. He stayed in that role until 2000, when he made the switch to MSNBC.
After working at MSNBC for three years, Holt was offered a position as a fill-in anchor on NBC’s flagship news programs, Nightly News and Today. For ten years, from 2007 to 2015, he was the weekend anchor for NBC’s flagship newscast, Nightly News. After Brian Williams’ suspension in February of that year for making false assertions about his role in numerous events, NBC promoted Lester Holt to serve as the temporary anchor of the weeknight NBC Nightly News broadcast.
