Meyer Howard Abrams, more commonly known as M.H. Abrams, was an American literary critic born on July 23, 1912, in Long Branch, New Jersey, United States, and passed away on April 21, 2015, in Ithaca, New York. He is credited with revolutionizing the study of the Romantic era in English literature through his groundbreaking analysis. In addition, from 1962 to 2000, he was the general editor of A Norton Anthology on English Literature, which went through seven editions. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University around 1934, Abrams continued his education by working a year under the tutelage of I.A. Richards at the University of Oxford. He then acquired a master’s degree and a doctorate from Harvard University (1940).


In 1945, he became a teaching staff member at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He was promoted to tenured professor in 1953 and was honored with the title of professor emeritus in 1983. His multiple fellowships took him worldwide, including postings at the City of Toronto, the University of British Columbia, the University of Oxford, and the California State at Los Angeles. While Abrams was still a student, he penned his first book, which was published in 1934 and titled The Milk of Paradise: The Effects of Opium Visions on the Works by De Quincey, Crabbe, Francis Thompson, et Coleridge. The Mirror, the Lamp: Romanticism Theory, and the Critical Tradition, which he published in 1953, was an enlarged version of the dissertation he had written for his Ph.D. He quickly rose to the forefront of Romantic literature researchers with the publication of this second book.
