Marc-André Fleury Bio

Marc-Andre Fleury (born on November 28, 1984) is a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender playing for the Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League (NHL). Marc was drafted from the Quebe Marc made his NHL debut immediately in 2003-04 at the age of 18 (three months younger than Rick DiPietro, New York Islanders’ second-youngest goaltender). On October 10, 2003 Marc appeared in his first NHL game against the Los Angeles Kings, recording an impressive 46-save performance, which included a penalty shot save, in a 3-0 loss. His very next NHL start was on October 18th. He had 31 saves and a win over the Detroit Red Wings. Marc’s first NHL shutout came on October 30, 2003 in a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. Jean-Sebastien Aubin, Sebastien Caron, and Marc shared time together.

He was able to live up to his first-overall-pick expectations and earned Rookie of Month honors in October with a 22-2 record, 1.96 goals against the average (GAA), and a.943 save percentage. Marc’s performance started to decline as the season progressed, mainly because of Pittsburgh’s poor defense. The team gave up more than 30 shots per game and seldom became an offensive threat. After returning from the 2004 World Junior Championships with a second consecutive gold medal, Marc was loaned to Team Canada. He was then sent back to the QMJHL on the 29th of January 2004. Marc’s $3million contract bonus, which he could have received if he had stayed and achieved several performance goals, was considered a factor in his return to Cape Breton due to financial difficulties.

Marc offered to forfeit the bonus to stay with the club, but it was not accepted. He finished the QMJHL season with Cape Breton in a first round elimination and was subsequently assigned to Pittsburgh’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and appeared in 2 post-season games. 2005-06 As NHL play was postponed due to the labour dispute, Marc continued to play with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2004-05, where he posted a 26-19-4 record, a 2.52 GAA and a .901 save percentage. Marc was recalled to Pittsburgh on October 10, 2005, after he had been called up from the minors. He was unable to play in NHL play in 2005-06.

Marc had a 3.25 GAA, a.898 save rate and the Penguins finished last in the Eastern Conference. Marc was the Penguins’ first goalie, competing with Jocelyn Thibault and Sebastien Caron. 2006-07 Marc played behind a weak defense but was able impress team management with his technique, performance, and signed a $2.59 million contract extension in the off-season. His stats significantly improved during the next campaign. He played behind the better Penguins team that featured rising stars Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Molkin, and recorded 5 shutouts with a 2.83 GAA. Marc won his 40th game in a 2-1 win over the New York Rangers.

He joined Tom Barrasso to become the only Penguins goaltender to achieve 40 wins in a single season. He also broke Johan Hedberg’s single-season franchise record for the most games and minutes played. Marc made his NHL playoff debut against the Ottawa Senators, the eventual Stanley Cup finalists, in the first round and recorded his first playoff win in Game 2, recording 34 saves in a 4-3 win at Scotiabank Place. Marc’s strong performances in the series were praised, but the Penguins were eliminated after five games. 2007-08 Marc began 2007-08 slowly. He won four consecutive games, before suffering a high ankle sprain against Calgary Flames on December 6th. He returned as a starter on March 2nd after a brief conditioning stint in the AHL with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Marc made the decision to change the color of his goaltending equipment to plain white, instead of the bright yellow that was his signature. This gave him an optical advantage over other shooters.

Marc returned from injury and helped the Penguins win their Atlantic Division. They went 10-2-1 with a 1.45 GAA, which led to a 12-2 playoff run that saw them reach the Stanley Cup Finals against Detroit Red Wings. In Game 5 at Detroit, Marc recorded the most impressive performance of his career. He stopped 55 of 58 shots to keep the Penguins from elimination. He made perhaps the most memorable save against Mikael Samsson in the second period. He barely touched the puck to keep Pittsburgh alive, which Petr Sykora ultimately ended. Marc’s poor attempt to cover a loose puck in Game 6 by sitting on it resulted in the puck being pushed into the net. The own goal turned out to be the Stanley Cup-winner, credited to Henrik Zetterberg. ” The one in which I sat? Marc replied. Marc said. (Expletive) yes. It was a horrible experience. He would soon recover, however, by the beginning of the next season. Marc declared, “I’m done” Marc said, “I’m done with it.” There is nothing I can do. You know what I mean, I don’t think that we lost the finals because of one goal.

It was my fault for not putting it in, but it was the best out of seven. They beat us with a strong team.” Marc finished the playoffs with three shutouts, a new team record and a record 14-6. His playoffs-best. 933 save rate was also a highlight. Marc signed a seven-year contract worth US $35 million with the Penguins in the off-season. It was effective July 3rd. It contained a no-movement clause as well as an ance for Game 6, but the Flyers won in Pittsburgh in Game 5. Marc was unable to allow Marc another goal after allowing 3 goals in the first period. The Penguins won 5-3 from a deficit of 3-0. The Penguins went the full distance in the second round against the Washington Capitals. For four seasons, he was major junior with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. He won the Mike Bossy Trophy for the league’s best prospect and the TELUS cup as the best defensive player in 2003. Marc joined the Penguins from 2003-04. He won the Stanley Cup championship five years later with the team in 2009. He has twice represented Canada as a junior. In 2003-04, he won back-to-back Silver Medals at the World Junior Championships. At the 2010 Winter Olympics, Vancouver, he won a gold medal for Team Canada. He is amazing.

Marc and the Penguins’ defense helped carry the team to the playoffs despite Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin being sidelined by injuries for most of 2010-11 In the series, he posted a save percentage of.899 2011-12 Fleury was left with little to no options after backup goalies Brent Johnson, Brad Thiessen and Brad Thiessen failed to make it through the 2011-12 season. Marc played 67 games in the season, starting 23 consecutive games at one point leading up to the All-Star Break, and finished the season with 42 wins (second only to Pekka Rinne). Marc’s impressive regular season campaign was hampered by a disappointing playoff run. He was eliminated by the Philadelphia Flyers in round one and posted a.834 save rate and 4.63 goals against the average. 2012-2013 Marc was back in the nets with a vengeance after the lockout season. He put some of his best marks in the short season. He finished the season with a record 23-8, which tied him for fourth place in the league. His save percentage and goals against average also continued to rank him among the top half of goaltenders.

Marc’s playoff troubles continued however; after posting a shutout in his playoff game, he was less than impressive in following starts, leaving backup Tomas Vokoun as the continued starter. The Penguins’ promising 2012-2013 season ended abruptly with a 4-0 loss to the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference Finals. season. Fleury was able to finish with a record of 36-20-5, while the Penguins were fourth in the Eastern Conference.Marc was awarded two silver medals at the IIHF World Junior Championships for Team Canada. In 2003, he made his debut in Halifax. He was defeated by Russia by Canada 3-2 in the gold-medal game. However, he had a 1.57 GAA. He was also named Top Goaltender of the tournament and Tournament MVP. Although Marc was playing in the NHL the next year leading up to the tournament, the Pittsburgh Penguins lent him to Team Canada.

Marc was the captain of Team Canada in the gold medal game, but he made a costly error that cost his team the championship. Marc left his net after the game was tied at 3-3, with just five minutes remaining in regulation. This allowed Patrick O’Sullivan of Team USA to play the puck. Marc’s clearing attempt, however, hit Braydon Coburn (his own defenseman) and trickled into his net. This was the difference as the Americans won 4-3. Marc was selected to Team Canada on December 30, 2009. Although he did not participate in the tournament, Martin Brodeur and Roberto Luongo shared the goaltending duties. However, he still won a gold medal when Canada beat the United States 3-2 inMarc was the son of France Fleury and Andre Fleury.
