Australia’s Marcos Ambrose races in NASCAR for Richard Petty Motorsports in the Sprint Cup Series and, on occasion, the Nationwide Series in the #9 Stanley Ford Fusion. Australian V8 Supercar series champion in 2003 and 2004. At the age of 10, Ambrose got his start in kart racing. Multiple state championships in Tasmania led to his switch to Formula Ford in 1996. Marcos Ambrose’s father, Ross Ambrose, co-founded Formula Ford chassis maker Van Diemen with Ralph Firman Sr.. Hence the family has deep roots in the sport. In 2003 and 2004, he was the first Ford driver to win back-to-back titles in seven years, both with them.
In 2006, Ambrose was contracted by Ford Motor Company to race in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series for Wood Brothers/JTG Racing. But Ambrose did not start until midway through the 2006 campaign. As with teammate Wood Brothers/JTG Racing driver Bobby East, Ambrose was not authorized by NASCAR to start in the faster races for the first three NCTS events since they were hosted on intermediate to high-speed ovals. At the Kroger 250 at Martinsville Speedway on April 1, 2006, Ambrose made his Truck Series debut, qualifying in the 20th position and finishing in the 33rd position after getting caught up in an accident that occurred in front of him. In a national NASCAR series race, Ambrose is the first noteworthy Australian driver to compete since Dick Johnson in 1990.
